Andy Roddick and John Isner Lose First Round Doubles Match At 2012 Summer Olympics
Andrew P. Scott-USA TODAY

Andy Roddick and John Isner might have sounded like an odd doubles pairing and it turned out to be.  The weird doubles pairing lasted all of one game against a team from Brazil in the 2012 Summer Olympics.  The two Americans just were not ready to play on the big stage.

Doubles tennis is a whole different animal than singles tennis.  Andy Roddick and Isner are both pretty good singles players but you can not just throw two guys together and hope it works.  They ended up playing a team that has a ton of experience in doubles play and they just got smoked.  It was a valiant effort in the second set, but they had dug themselves a giant hole.

Not a lot was expected out of the Andy Roddick andJohn Isner pairing but a fight would have been nice to see.  They were destroyed in a the first set and the second set was better, but not good enough.  They tried but something tells me those two will not be playing doubles again.  Andy Roddick might be nearing the age where he doesn’t want to play in the Olympics anymore, anyways.

It is still early in the Olympics, so expect to see a lot more upsets in a lot of different sports.  This might not be an upset in the world of doubles tennis, but the USA expected their big name pairing would be able to win a couple matches and maybe contend for a gold medal.  Unfortunately, super teams do not always work.  Chemistry and team work will often beat talent in matches like this.

Andy Roddick and John Isner may be good, but it just wasn’t enough.
