Michael Phelps Wins Olympic Record 19th Medal In 4×200 Freestyle Relay
Kirby Lee-US PRESSWIRE

It was expected to happen, but Michael Phelps has made history.  After winning gold as part of the 4×200 freestyle relay at the 2012 Summer Olympics, Michael Phelps has now won a record 19 medals.  Needless to say, that is quite the impressive feat.

To put this into perspective, Michael Phelps has 19 medals and 15 of them are gold.  That is a pretty good success rate if you ask me.  Although he looked bad in an early event at the Olympics, he has certainly rebounded.  This is not the 2008 version of Phelps but he is still a very good swimmer.  This is the perfect cap to his awesome career.

This is a great moment for the USA and the Olympics.  Phelps has been one of the best all around performers in the history of the games.  By all accounts, this could not have happened to a nicer guy.  He has won with class, even though he had some bad publicity after the 2008 games but that does not change the medals won.

I do not know if we will ever see 19 medals broken.  That is quite the record to hold and it will take a little while before someone else is able to take that crown.  For now, Phelps is going to be in the books as the most dominant performer in Olympics history.  That is something that you can not take away from him.  That is something that he is going to be able to tell his kids and grandkids for a long time.

He certainly helped bring swimming back to the forefront of the Olympics, which is never a bad thing.  The races are always competitive and having a guy like Michael Phelps in them helped people pay attention to the sport.  Sounds like everyone has won in this deal.
