Former Chicago Mayor Richard Daley Wants A Second NFL Team In Chicago

Say the name Richard Daley around the Chicago area and you are bound to hear some great responses.  He was quite the popular mayor in his time and people tend to respect his opinion.  Daley’s newest opinion could be big as the ex-mayor wants a new stadium but more importantly, he wants a second NFL team in Chicago.

“I really believe we could get a second football team,” the former mayor said. “I’ve always believed — the Chicago Cardinals, Bears — why is it that New York has two? Florida has three, San Francisco has two. Now you think of that, we could easily take — Chicago loves sports and we could get a second team in here.

Richard Daley also wants a new stadium in order to have events like soccer and the Final Four but let’s focus on the second football team.  Chicago is full of rabid fans.  The Chicago Bears are probably one of the most supported teams in football.  If you introduce a second team in that market, it will not take long for them to have a loyal following.

It has always struck me as odd that Chicago only has two baseball teams, yet only one basketball and one football team.  They have tons of sport fans and they could easily support a second team in either of those sports.  Instead of complaining about how small markets don’t support their team, stick another team in a big market and watch the money pile up.

I hope that Richard Daley gets his wish.  A second team in Chicago would be great for the league and for the sport.  If you end up with a rivalry like New York has in football, I think the addition of a team would be a success.
