Apparently basketball Coach John Calipari from the University of Kentucky doesn’t just recruit 5-star athletes. This time around, he recruited Drake, better known as a rapper and former star from the TV show Degrassi.
Except he didn’t recruit Drake to play basketball. Instead, Calipari and the UK Wildcats inspired Drake to graduate high school.
This weekend in an interview after the alumni game, Drake said he never really got a great school experience, and that most people don’t even know that he dropped out of high school to pursue his entertainment career.
Drake was first invited to the UK in 2009 to star as a celebrity coach for Midnight Madness. Ever since then he has considered Kentucky his real home and it gives him a sense of “school, home and belonging.” He thanks Coach Calipari and the rest of the team for his motivation.
Since then, Drake has been seen behind the bench during NCAA March Madness in 2010 and the team provided him with one of their Championship rings after they won this year.
Drake coached another alumni team this year that won, consisting of DeMarcus Cousins and Anthony Davis, but that’s definitely not the most treasured experience he gained from a relationship with the UK.
Sure enough, Drake attended classes this summer and will be joining the graduating class of 2012 this month. He may be rich and set on money for his entire life but he is setting a positive influence to a handful of fans by valuing a high school education.
