Introduction
Sports movies are one of those phenomenons where you either really love and can't get enough of them, or they completely fall on their face and are some of the worse movies ever (The Replacements, anyone?) There are plenty of movies to choose from, but few that truly move us, entertain us or make us laugh like the 25 on this list. Sports movies are their own category of film, but can spread across multiple genres and provide so much in the story lines we cannot help but sit at the edge of our seat. There are probably some I left off the list you feel are worthy, and if that's the case be sure to comment below and tell me about it.
25. Tin Cup
Tin Cup is a hilarious movie about Roy McAvoy, a former golf prodigy who owns a driving range in West Texas. A set of circumstances gets him to attempt to qualify for the US Open and succeeds. This film combines comedy, romance and drama all into one awesome experience.
24. Eight Men Out
Eight Men Out is a dramatic recount of Major League Baseball’s most famous scandal: the Chicago Black Sox. Eight White Sox players conspired to lose the 1919 World Series on purpose, and succeeded.
23. White Men Can't Jump
White Men Can’t Jump follows two basketball street hustlers who eventually join forces in an effort to increase their profits. Billy Hoyle (Woody Harrelson) just doesn’t know when to quit while he’s ahead sometimes.
22. The Color of Money
Martin Scorsese directs this story of Fast Eddie Felson (Paul Newman), who in teaching a young pool prodigy (Tom Cruise) the ropes of pool hustling, decides to make a comeback of his own.
21. Brian's Song
Brian’s song is a tear-jerker that follows the life of Brian Piccolo who gets diagnosed with terminal cancer after joining the Chicago Bears. The story is told through friend and teammate Gale Sayers’ eyes, who helps Piccolo go through the ordeal.
20. 61*
Billy Crystal presents the story of New York Giants teammates Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle as they chase Babe Ruth’s single season home run record. Crystal really nailed the fact that fans did not want to see Maris break the record and preferred Mantle instead, despite Mantle’s very visible show-boaty life style off the field.
19. Blue Chips
Blue Chips is based on a fictional college called Western that digs at the controversial nature of college recruiting. In order to put a winning team on the court, coach Pete Bell is forced to do everything he can to convince high school players to come to his school. The ending will surprise you.
18. A League of Their Own
This comedy-drama is loosely based on the All-American Girls Baseball League that started during World War II. The movie centers around one team, the Rockford Peaches, and the ups and downs of their first season. An eccentric head coach and a team full of crazy characters make this an easy movie to latch on to.
17. Glory Road
Glory Road is about the touching true story of the Texas Western (now UTEP) basketball team that became the first team to start five African-American players. Their rise to the NCAA championship is incredible, and this movie captures all the emotion involved in their struggled to get to the top.
16. Ali
Will Smith does a great job portraying controversial fighter Mohammad Ali in this movie that follows his life and the trials and tribulations he goes through as both a black man and a muslim, a combination that spawned a lot of hatred towards him in his career.
15. Jerry MaGuire
Jerry MaGuire (Tom Cruise) is a hot shot agent who is dealt a reality check when he is forced to leave the agency he works for, and Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.) is the only athlete who sticks with him. The two develop a close relationship and MaGuire becomes close with the only girl who trusted him enough to leave the agency and work exclusively for him.
14. The Hurricane
Denzel Washington is terrific depicting the real-life story of Rubin “The Hurricane” Carter, a middleweight boxer who is convicted of triple murder in Paterson, New Jersey.
13. The Natural
This movie follows the surprising rise of Roy Hobbs from average baseball player to major league legend. Robert Redford, Glenn Close and Robert Duvall give terrific performances making this film is a must for any baseball fan.
12. Seabiscuit
Seabiscuit dramatizes the incredible true story of the racehorse that was undersized but had a giant heart, capturing the hearts of race fans and a nation that was entrenched in the Great Depression.
11. Caddyshack
Bill Murray, Chevy Chase and Rodney Dangerfield are hilarious in this film that takes place almost exclusively on a golf course. Not only is Caddyshack a must for all sports fans, but for pretty much anyone who enjoys a good comedy.
10. Raging Bull
Martin Scorsese directs this powerful story of Jake LaMotta, a self-destructive boxer who, while his boxing career soars, his personal life suffers as a result.
9. Rocky IV
The best of the Rocky series involves the element of Russia vs. USA and shows Rocky going through the loss of his trainer and best friend Apollo Creed. Rocky comes out of retirement to fight Ivan Drago, whose “I must break you” line has stood the test of time.
8. Major League
Major League is loosely based off the Cleveland Indians and their struggles to win anything of note for several years. The fictional players are hilarious, but it’s also a unique baseball movie in that it doesn’t end with your typical strikeout or home run in the bottom of the 9th.
7. The Miracle
The Miracle is based on the incredible true story of the USA hockey team that took down the mighty Russians in the 1980 Olympics. Kurt Russell gives a brilliant performance as coach Herb Brooks, who puts together a team of amateurs that beats a Russian team full of professionals. Al Michael’s famous “Do you believe in miracles? Yes!” line brings you to the edge of your seat.
6. Field of Dreams
Field of Dreams follows Ray Kinsella, an Iowa corn farmer who hears voices telling him if he builds it, they will come. So he builds a baseball diamond in his corn field and the Chicago Black Sox show up, but can only be seen by those that believe. Kevin Costner gives a great performance and the story is brilliant. This is a must watch for sports fans.
5. Rudy
The character Rudy is based off a real life person named Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger, who was always told he would never make it as a college football player because he was too small. He did whatever it took to make it to Notre Dame, make the team and run out of that tunnel for his father. He goes through a lot to dress for a game but when it does, the team and the home town fans make it a magical moment.
4. Mystery, Alaska
In this comedy-drama, a small-town Alaska local hockey team is given the opportunity to play the New York Rangers. Based in fictional Mystery, Alaska, this cast full of stars gets you emotionally involved. Russell Crowe plays the team captain, an older player who has to make room for the young stud talent Stevie Weeks. Many story lines make this more than just a hockey movie.
3. Remember the Titans
Remember the Titans follows the incredible story of one all black and one all white high school in Virginia in the early 70s who are forced to integrate and it creates a major conflict on the football team. Coach Herman Boone (Denzel Washington) brings the team together at camp, but when they return from camp all the conflict ensues. This is a feel-good story that could bring you to tears on more than one occasion.
2. Hoosiers
In Indiana, high school basketball is equivalent to high school football in Texas. This movie depicts Norman Dale, a controversial new coach for the Hickory Hoosiers, leading his team to the state championship, and the rough road he has to travel along the way as the town disapproves of his methods.
1. Cinderella Man
Cinderella Man follows the incredible story of boxer James J. Braddock, who goes from working on the docks in New Jersey to Heavyweight champion of the world. Russell Crowe and Paul Giamatti are incredible, and director Ron Howard does complete justice to the career of Braddock, who was one of the most courageous fighters ever. This is by far my favorite sports movie ever, and I still tear up in the Madison Square Garden scene when Braddock is forced to beg for money to turn his electricity back on.
