Cheerleader Takes a Tumble in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Opener

By Steve Palumbo

One of the holiday seasons most iconic annual traditions, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, got off to a dubious start when the opening number containing hundreds of cheerleaders from around the country didn’t quite go as planned. One of the cheerleaders fell after several attempts to get her off the ground failed.

In fact, one could say the botched lift attempt was an epic fail unworthy of giving thanks. The large ensemble of cheerleaders consisted of some of the brightest and most talented captains, co-captains and officers from high school cheer squads all over the country. It’s an honor to be chosen as a cheerleading participant in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Unfortunately, for one of the cheerleaders, it’s an experience she will never forget – for all the wrong reasons.

In the biggest parade in the county, as millions of people at home and in the crowd looked on, the young lady fell backwards as a group of fellow pep-squad participants failed to muster up the strength to get her up in the air. The fall took place at center screen on the TV and directly in front of the legendary Macy’s department store on 34th street.

If you missed it live – Here it is….

Maybe it was the nerves or perhaps it was the pre-parade meal, but whatever the reason, the team managed to screw up a lift that even the greenest cheerleaders pull off on a daily basis. Epic fail aside, the parade still managed to put the city of New York into a festive mood despite still coping with the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.
