10 Craziest Moments In Baseball From 2012
2012 was a great year in sports. There were fantastic moments in almost every sport and almost at every level. In this slideshow, we are going to look back at 10 of the craziest moments that happened in baseball this season. Some of these will seem like no-doubters while others are little bit off the beaten path. No matter the case, they all make up a great list.
This list includes more things than just what happened at the major league level. We have two different levels of college ball and even a Little League appearance. Not exactly bad for a list that only goes 10 deep. We feel that these moments sum up how crazy this sport can end up being.
We have everything from plays off the field to controversy in the media. This list tries to cover everything in the sport, on and off the field. For instance, you will find a certain team from Florida makes multiple appearances due to how dysfunctional they were this year. That is not a good thing if you are a fan of that team.
Of course, we could not fit everything from 2012 into this list. If you have suggestions or additions for the list, let us know in the comment section. You might know of something that completely slipped under the radar, yet was crazy enough to make people take pause.
And with that, let us get to the list. We present to you the 10 craziest baseball moments from 2012. Hopefully you are sitting down when you read it because it is going to knock you off your feet. That is how wacky this sport can end up being.
Salberg Saves The Day
When Derrick Salberg went over the fence to save a game, he became the play of the year in baseball. It does not matter what level it was, just look at the kid GO OVER THE FENCE to catch the final out. That's dedication.
Ozzie Offends Florida
In retrospect, Ozzie Guillen was doomed from the start. Complimenting Fidel Castro while you coach in Miami? Yeah, not a smart move and it ended with Guillen being suspended for a few games.
There were some brutal calls in baseball but I'll use Dewayne Wise as the main example. He went into the stands to make a play and he ended up dropping the ball. It was clear on any video replay that he dropped it, but the umpire still called the batter out. We really need replay.
When Purdue and Indiana met in the Big 10 Championship, no one could have predicted what happened. A wild ninth inning was punctuated with a massive brawl that involved almost everyone in uniform. Quite the night.
Little Leaguer Sued
In 2012, Elizabeth Lloyd was struck in the face with a baseball. In 2012, she decided to sue Matthew Migliaccio for damages. It was a total accident but she wanted 150 grand from the kid and his family. That pretty much defines crazy.
Florida Fire Sale
The Miami Marlins made a big splash in the offseason but that did not last long. At the end of the season, the team sold off almost all of their core to the Toronto Blue Jays in order to save money. Looks like the offseason was just a sham to get more taxpayer dollars.
Stephen Strasburg was having a great year when the Washington Nationals decided to shut him down. It was crazy at the time and it might have cost them a title. It was done to preserve his long term health, but you do not have a shot to win a title every year.
Perfect Game Explosion
Perfect games and no-hitters were all the rage in 2012. Seriously, there was a time when it felt like one was happening every week. When a guy like Philip Humber throws a perfect game, you know things are out of the ordinary.
Miggy's Triple Crown Chase
Not many players even come close to the Triple Crown, so it was great to see Miguel Cabrera bring home the award. Although he didn't have the playoffs that he would have liked, his regular season performance showed why he is the most feared hitter in baseball.
AL MVP Race
The AL MVP race divided baseball fans into two camps. You had the traditionalists, who backed Miguel Cabrera. On the other side, you had the saber crowd who was firmly behind Mike Trout. Cabrera won the award but the debate still rages on. It really is a question without much of an answer.
