Following the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. plenty of NFL teams around the league planned a game tribute to the families and victims. The New England Patriots, New York Giants and the New York Jets have pregame tributes to the victims but Giants WR Victor Cruz has something a little more personal in mind.
After learning that one of the shooting victims, Jack Pinto, had Cruz as his favorite player the Giants star called the Pinto family to offer his condolences for their unthinkable loss. Besides just calling the family Cruz plans on honoring Pinto with a written tribute on his shoes during their game on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, calling him “My Hero”.
A parent should never have to bury their child, especially one as young as most of the victims in the shooting on Friday. Reportedly the Pinto family was considering burying Jack in his No. 80 Cruz jersey.
Senseless tragedies like the one that happened in a small Connecticut town this past week makes the world take pause and revalue their prioritizes. For something like this to happen to a school full of little children is unthinkable and horrific. There’s not much more that can be said.
Moments of silence, pregame plans and player tributes are fitting in a time like this. The NFL is watched by so many people and the league has such a widespread platform that it’s almost their civil responsibility to honor the tragic event in some way or another.
From the Rant family we offer our sincerest condolences to everyone affected by this horrific tragedy. The families and friends of the victims and the entire Newtown community is in our thoughts.
