The 20 Most Powerful Couples in Sports Today
No Couple Should Have All This Power
As much as we shouldn’t care about the dating lives of celebrities and athletes, we all use it as our own little guilty pleasure. When new couples emerge, we get so fascinated about the relationship. We have to know every minute detail about the couple. For this reason alone, it’s hard for these couples to last, seeing as people are constantly wondering what they are up to. This is one reason why the couple above, which is Maria Sharapova and Sasha Vujacic, called it quits this year, or maybe it’s because Maria finally realized her fiancé is just awful at the game of basketball.
Although Maria and Sasha didn’t make it, there are a lot of couples who have been together through the years. Plus, we have some new couples that have emerged from this past year that are definitely worth noting.
Here are my 20 most powerful couples in the sports world. If I missed any – which I’m sure I did – it’s not that I’m lazy, it’s that I just don’t care. Aside from quoting the great Office Space, it’s just hard for me to stay in the gossip loop. Athletes break up with the boyfriends/girlfriends, wives/husbands so often it’s hard to remember who is actually together.
Alas, here is the 20 most powerful couple throughout the wide world of sports, or better yet, in American sports. God knows that there are some huge European soccer couples that I know nothing about.
Matt Treanor & Misty May-Treanor
This is a case where the woman wears the pants in the relationship. While Matt Treanor is a journeyman backup catcher, his wife, Misty, is a multiple Olympic gold medal winner in volleyball. Matt was last seen playing with the Dodgers, which is why Misty is with Mr. Slim Fast in this picture.
Wayne & Janet Gretzky
The reason why the Gretzkys are on this list is quite simple: their offspring, Paulina, is a gift that just keeps on giving.
Andre Agassi & Steffi Graf
I'm going to assume that this couple has more grand slam titles between them than we saw grand slams hit in all of baseball last season. If their kid isn't an amazing tennis player, then I just don't understand how genetics work.
Nomar Garciaparra & Mia Hamm
An oldie but a goodie. Nomar and Mia are still one of the best sports couples going today. Plus, he's like the only ESPN personality I like, so he's got that going for him. And I guess since Mia was the face for women's soccer for like a decade, she kind of matters as well.
Anna Kournikova & Enrique Iglesias
This is just a friendly reminder that Anna Kournikova still exists. You're welcome.
Cole & Heidi Hamels
Heidi Hamels is probably my favorite baseball WAG, and Cole Hamels is one of my favorite pitchers in all of baseball. With that combination, it's hard not to include them on this list.
Carmelo Anthony & Lala
Carmelo Anthony is having quite the year with the New York Knicks, and his beautiful wife Lala, who was an MTV VJ back when they actually played videos, makes his life even more joyous.
Mike Fisher & Carrie Underwood
I don't really know all that much about hockey, so I don't really know if Mike Fisher is very good. But when you're Carrie Underwood's husband, you have to be good at something. She is a stone cold fox.
Jay Cutler & Kristin Cavallari
Kristin Cavallari was a part of the MTV reality series The Hills. You know how reality series are so awful you hope a lot of it is stage? Well, that's how the Bears probably feel whenever Jay Cutler plays against the Green Bay Packers.
Dario Franchitti & Ashley Judd
Dario Franchitti might have to win like fifty Indy 500s before he isn't called Mr. Ashley Judd.
Andy Roddick & Brooklyn Decker
The only bad thing about Andy Roddick retiring from the game of tennis is that we will no longer see Brooklyn Decker in the crowd for his matches.
Lamar Odom & Khloe Kardashian
It saddens me I have to put this couple this high on my list. For some reason, Khloe Kardashian really matters to a lot of people. Can someone please explain to me why this woman matters so much?
Cristiano Ronaldo & Irina Shayk
In the Dark Knight, Bruce Wayne dated a Russian ballerina. Although Cristiano Ronaldo might not be Batman, he is one of the most popular athletes in the world, and he's dating a Russian model. It's pretty clear that Ronaldo wins at life.
Jay-Z & Beyonce
Now that Jay-Z is a majority owner of a basketball team, he can be included as a part of the sports world, right? If not, oh well, he and Beyonce are probably one of the most powerful couples in the world anyhow.
Rory McIleroy & Caroline Wozniacki
Ever since Rory and Caroline hooked up, her game has fallen off the map and his might be the best going in golf. Let's hope for Rory that she doesn't get too fed up with her struggles.
Dwyane Wade & Gabrielle Union
These two are just perfect for each other. Gabrielle Union is easily one of the most beautiful women in the world, while D-Wade can still ball.
David & Victoria Beckham
It seems like these two lovebirds have been together forever, which is pretty shocking in today's world. I wonder how many times David tells Victoria what he really, really wants...
Christian Ponder & Samantha Steele
It's the new "it" couple in sports! Samantha Steele is everyone's new favorite sideline girl, while Christian Ponder "led" his Minnesota Vikings to the playoffs.
Tom Brady & Gisele Bundchen
Although most men won't reveal their "mancrush", I have no problems admitting that Tom Brady is mine. It's like the Dodge commercial says: he's perfect. It also helps that Gisele is one of the biggest supermodels in the world, too.
Justin Verlander & Kate Upton
Although this couple has not been officially confirmed, it's hard not to put Justin Verlander and Kate Upton as the number one "it" couple in sports.
