There have been many things in the world of sports that just seem too much out of the ordinary and need to stop. While we don’t see it anymore, the art of tearing down the goalposts was something fans would do all the time. The next thing that can go is storming the court after a top team is beaten in college basketball. It happened again on Wednesday night after the Miami Hurricanes pounded the No. 1 Duke Blue Devils. I get that the fans and students are happy about getting a big win like that, but in this day and age, it must end.
Anyone who follows sports heard about a man in a wheelchair being wheeled into one of these mobs last weekend when North Carolina State beat Duke. While he wanted to be in the mob scene to celebrate a Wolfpack victory, who thought that was actually a good idea? I know I didn’t and at some point, someone is going to get seriously hurt during one of these situations. Then what happens?
Before that happens, why not just end it now? Get the police officers near the court and before the game, tell the fans who storm the court that they will have any future attendance banned if they go for it. There will be some who foolishly decide it is worth going out there, but a lot of this will stop. I know people love seeing the fans rush the court to celebrate with their team, but let’s be proactive about this before something really bad happens and stop it.
