Top 10 Sports/Celebrity Couples of All Time
Ten Best Sports/Celebrity Couples of All Time
The sports world and the celebrity circle, these two areas seem to mix much more often than not. It could be the similar income, a desire for the attention a sports and celebrity relationship brings or maybe just maybe it’s true love. Whatever the case may be in the last 100 years we have had some pretty interesting sports and celebrity entanglements. Some good, some bad, but all noteworthy. Some of these flings may have worked out awful for the parties involved but then again as the saying goes, "It is better to have loved and lost, then to never receive alimony."
Here are the rules of the game. Both parties need to have been famous on their own and not simply piggybacking off of their partners celebrity persona. Both people need to be relevant sports or celebrity stars. Yes, as much as I would like to include the most beautiful country singer of all time, Carrie Underwood, she is married to an athlete who nobody has heard of, so that pair did not make the cut. There are also no duplicates allowed on the list. That means the Kardashians will be limited to one and only one appearance. Last but not least this ranking is meant to start arguments not end them. Everyone has their own opinion, especially when it comes to love so feel free to compile your own list and let me know the results.
So as my Valentines Day present to you, it's time to bring you:
The Top 10 Sports/Celebrity Couples of all time
10. Enrique Iglesias and Anna Kournikova
Here we have an interesting duo. Anna Kournikova is famous for her career as a WTA Tennis Player. If my records serve me right she didn’t win one singles title during her entire career on tour. Zero career titles! She retired at the age of 21 with back problems, but that certainly didn’t stop her rise to stardom. On the other side of the equation you have Enrique who knows nothing but success. He is one of the most accomplished Latin singers in the history of music and is still producing chart topping hits. These two have been together since 2001 and are planning to purchase a house close to Miami in the near future. A proposal should be coming soon and it will probably go something like, “I can be your hero baby!!”
9. Lamar Odom and Khloe Kardashian
Checking in at number nine is the E! Entertainment Celebrity Couple, Khloe and Lamar. What's funny to me is that I'm still not sure what Khloe Kardashian is famous for. She doesn’t act, she doesn’t sing, she’s not an athlete, but she sure does have one really good looking sister. Then you have Lamar who used to be a fairly famous basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers. Since these two tied the knot Lamar has been in and out of more uniforms than the Tasmanian Devil in Space Jam. His career has seemed to take a turn for the worst, but don’t worry his celebrity persona is only rising.
8. Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electra
Now this is where we get to start having some fun! What a pair, a man who makes Mike Tyson look like Gandhi and a former Baywatch beauty who can have almost any guy she wants. In 1998, at 7 a.m. these two were happily married standing in a Las Vegas Chapel. When asked for a summary of the ceremony all Rodman’s publicist had to say was, “ Dennis may have been deeply intoxicated at the time.” This perfect match sadly ended nine days later when they both filed for annulment. It’s just sad to think of the potential reality show history we missed by these two not working out.
7. Tony Romo and Jessica Simpson
It was November 2007, Jessica Simpson was on the rebound train from Nick Lachey station and headed straight for America’s Team. Their conductor, quarterback Tony Romo, was more than happy to settle down with the blond vixen. Once this relationship became public it only gave Cowboys fans one more excuse as to why Tony Romo couldn’t win playoff games. Bewildered fans even went as far as nicknaming Simpson, “Yoko Romo,” after the famous Yoko Ono, who many Beatles fans blamed for the demise of John Lennon. The relationship ended in 2009, but we did at least get something priceless from their time together. Who could forget Terrell Owens crying in his 2009 post-game interview when asked about putting the blame for the loss on Tony Romo and his recent vacation. Owens sobbing, “It unfair, that’s my quarterback, that’s my quarterback!!" He may be your quarterback Terrell but he certainly isn’t Jessica’s QB anymore.
6. Derek Jeter and Elmo
A moment Yankee fans would like to erase from their memory. It was Jeter’s rookie season and he wasn’t used to all the attention that came with being a big city sports star. He took a chance on love with a person known for their big heart and even bigger smile. Sadly it ended after two weeks but Elmo will always call Jeter, the one that got away.
(Just in case someone cannot clearly tell that I am kidding and to avoid a libelous law suit, this is just a joke. But, that’s what the guy gets for being mentioned as possible candidate to break Pete Rose’s hit record. Rose’s record will stand forever and that’s not a joke.)
5. Nomar Garciaparra and Mia Hamm
Finally a normal quality couple. Hamm famous for her 1999 Womans World Cup Victory, was also voted as one of FIFA’s Top 125 Soccer players(male or female) of all time. Hamm is the youngest woman ever to play on the World Cup squad as well, debuting at the stellar age of 15. Nomar Garciaparra was a great shortstop for the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers, but unfortunately he will always be known as the player who needed to be traded to finally spark the Red Sox World Series runs. What I respect most about this duo is that there is absolutely no drama. You never hear about anything crazy going on in their lives, just two famous sports stars and celebrities who found love.
4. David and Victoria Beckham
Now we are starting to hit couple royalty. David Beckham has a movie named after him, his own cologne line and is one of the most accomplished players in International soccer history. He played for arguably the two most famous football clubs, Manchester United and Real Madrid, leading his teams to seven league championships. Then there is Victoria Beckham, a beautiful singer/songwriter who is most famous for her days as, ”Posh Spice,” from the Spice Girls. She has become one of the leading fashion figures in all of the world and well deserves her spot on the king of soccer’s arm. There is one thing I, “Really really want,” though. “ I want a, I want a, I want a,” I want to stop seeing commercials during the Super Bowl with David Beckham in his underwear.
3. Joe Namath and Farrah Fawcett
Joe Namath or, “Broadway Joe,” as his fans so affectionately called him, will forever be famous for his early guarantee of winning Super Bowl III against a heavily favored Baltimore Colts team. Always known for being cocky and arrogant , Joe dated many famous celebrities but none more famous than Ms. Fawcett. Farrah Fawcett and her infamous poster spread was the apex of every young boys’ heart during her time. In fact, a scandalous Noxzema commercial with Joe was said to give her career the initial boost it needed. There’s not much information on the details of their relationship, but even though it was short their fling was enough to grab the third spot on this coveted list. P.S.(Look at that chest hair, those were the good ole' days when a man could be a man.)
2. Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen
These two may just be the, “It,” couple of our generation. You have possibly the best quarterback to ever play the game in Tom Brady. Only Tom and Joe Montana have won multiple Regular Season MVPs and Super Bowl MVPs. Tom currently holds the record for most touchdown passes in a season and is the only quarterback ever to win 10 division titles. Let’s not forget to give his gorgeous wife some love though. Gisele is one of the highest grossing models in history netting around $250 million so far in her career. Claudia Schiffer and Naomi Campbell have stated that Bündchen is the only true remaining, "Supermodel." She has stared in multiple Oscar nominated movies, but is most famous for her ad campaigns with Victoria Secret. Her “Red Hot Fantasy Bra,” worn in 2000 is still one of the most talked about lingerie debuts in history. As for that specific piece, Im sorry ladies there’s no chance you’ll be receiving that for Valentines Day. It's currently on display at the Guinness Book of World Records Headquarters and is worth a cool $15 million, the most expensive piece of lingerie ever created. What a team these two make, but they fall just short of our number one couple.
1. Joe Dimaggio and Marilyn Monroe
These two were the epitome of class and style. In 1954 when they were married at San Francisco Hall, they both were on top of their respective worlds. Joe was known as one of the best hitters in the history of baseball and was still drawing acclaim from his 56 game hit streak. Marilyn was the apple of every man’s eye and could draw the attention of almost every human being, including married presidents. If this wedding were to happen today, it would be the biggest publicity event in the history of entertainment. Unfortunately, their marriage didn’t last very long, but at least we can look at this photo and draw memories of when two of the most famous people in the world were wed.
