This really is turning into the year for crazy half-court buzzer beaters. Last week we had the cute little third grader making a last-second buzzer beater but today we get an even crazier shot.
New Rochelle High School (NY) was trailing by ten points with only three minutes to go against Mount Vernon High School in the Section 1 Class AA championship game. They managed the comeback and possibly one of the most insane half-court shots in history.
With only 2.9 seconds left, New Rochelle had possession of the ball and was hoping to heave it in the hoop from the half-court line. Mount Vernon stole the ball but then the unimaginable happened when New Rochelle’s Khalil Edney jumped out of nowhere to steal the ball back.
I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a shot quite like this one and it just barely left his hands on time. After replaying the video numerous times it looks like he released the ball with .1 second left. The fact that it didn’t even need to hit the backboard just makes it even more impressive.
I’m not sure if anyone could recreate the shot that New Rochelle made, it was clearly their lucky day. It definitely would have been a very controversial atmosphere after the shot. I’m actually a little surprised that a fight didn’t break out after the referees made the call official.
The New Rochelle fans definitely had a reason to storm the court after that buzzer beater. I know it’s only March, but this shot could easily be featured on SportsCenter’s top plays of the year.
