Wise Dan Makes His Return In A Field Of Five At Keeneland
In what will be his first start since earning 2012 Horse of the Year honors at the Eclipse Awards, Wise Dan will be facing a field of five this Friday in the Grade 1, $300,000 Maker’s 46 Mile at Keeneland. Wise Dan will breaking from the outside post, which shouldn’t hinder his running style too much as he usually likes to lay just off the pace.
Jose Lezcano, who rode Wise Dan to a win last year in the Grade 1 Shadwell mile at Keenelend when regular rider John Velazquez could not make it, has been appointed as the rider by trainer Charlie LoPresti. Velazquez has been sidelined for an unkown amount of time after a spill on Sunday at Aqueduct causing “minor fractures” and leaving his availability for the Kentucky Derby on May 5 in question.
The only problem Lezcano may have on Friday, while hoepfully comandeering Wise Dan to yet another win, is that he may need to go wide around each turn. Breaking from the five hole leaves Lezcano two options: break quickly and go straight for the lead, or break cleanly, duck right to the rail and save ground all the way around the track.
While staying just off the leader about two wide around the track may not be a good option, it is also available for a horse the caliber of Wise Dan.
Wise Dan, now six-years old, was a unanimous choice for horse racing’s 2012 Horse of the Year. He raced six times in 2012 and won all but one start, and concluded his 2012 campaign with a stellar performance in the 2012 Breeder’s Cup Mile at Santa Anita Park.
The field for the 2013 Maker’s 46 Mile is as followed, from the rail out: Silentio, Rafael Bejarano; Mr. Commons, Corey Nakatani; Skyring, Rosie Napravnik; Data Link, Javier Castellano; and Wise Dan, Lezcano.
Post time for the featured race will be at 5:13 pm Eastern Time, and the 10 race Keeneland card begins at 1:05 pm Eastern time.
