Michael Jordan’s Trainer Says He Had Food Poisoning During Infamous “Flu Game”

We know the story.

In Game 5 of the 1997 Finals, Michael Jordan played through the flu and led the Chicago Bulls to a crucial victory over the Utah Jazz. The Bulls won the game by a final score of 90-88, ending a pair of back-to-back victories that the Jazz had used to even the series. The Bulls won Game 5 and Game 6 to take home the NBA championship in six games.

However, the story behind the game is that Jordan played through the flu, an inspiring moment that simply adds to his legacy on the basketball court.

Well, now an interesting story is now coming out from Jordan’s trainer, Tim Grover. He says that Jordan had food poisoning, not the flu.

According to Grover, they were in a Park City hotel and were looking to order food. They called for pizza, but five guys came to make the delivery. Grover automatically thought that something was wrong — why would more than one, let alone five, deliver a pizza? Grover then said that, only Jordan made the decision to eat pizza.

Grover then continued in his story to ESPN, saying that he got a call around 2:00am that night that Jordan was curled up in the fetal position feeling sick. Grover says he immediately told him that it was food poisoning, not the flu.

Well the infamous story and performance by Jordan may have just become a little stranger and who really knows whether or not he was sick with the flu or something like this actually happened prior to Game 5 of the 1997 Finals.
