The stars keep coming for Jay-Z and his new sports agency, Roc Nation.
On Wednesday morning, news emerged that New York Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith had signed with Jay-Z and Roc Nation Sports — this after he began a new search following the NFL Draft.
Smith, who was originally considered to be the top quarterback within the draft field, plummeted out of the first round before eventually being selected at 39th overall. The former West Virginia quarterback had hopes of being amongst the top selections here in 2013, but regardless of his fall, he has found a good fit with the Jets.
New York is attempting to move forward from a drama-filled year in which Mark Sanchez struggled and Tim Tebow watched. Tebow has since been released and Sanchez is now being forced — as he should be — to compete with the other quarterbacks on the roster for the team’s starting job.
This is a great move by Jay-Z because because not only does he get a young star, but it’s a local one. In addition, there might not be any more publicized positional battle in football than the Jets and their quarterback race. Considering Smith keeps an image intact amongst a brutal, New York City media core — Jay-Z has a signee that could be the face of the city’s NFL attention down the line. Albeit the New York Giants and Eli Manning would probably still have plenty to say about that.
