Tiger Woods is not known for befriending fellow golfers and he’s especially not known for goofing around at major tournaments, but both things happened and the picture above is proof from day one of the 2013 U.S. Open.

Woods and Rory McIlroy — the Nos. 1 and 2 golfers in the world — were grouped together for the first round of the U.S. Open, along with World No. 3 golfer and 2013 Masters champion Adam Scott. Apparently Tiger wanted to lighten the mood with Rory before they teed off when he flicked him in the ear before play began.

Other pictures show Woods and McIlroy drinking with their arms interlaced, which is obviously another goofball moment between the 37-year-old legend and the 24-year-old rising star. But why? Why McIlroy and why now?

As mentioned, Woods isn’t really friendly to anyone, especially those who are legitimate challengers to his throne, so his seemingly sincere friendship with and fondness for McIlroy is a mystery. Of course, it would have a lot funnier had Woods flicked Sergio Garcia in the ear following their little spat at and after the Players Championship, but we can only dream of such media gold from the golf world.
