A scary moment on Saturday during the game between the Tampa Bay Rays and Kansas City Royals when pitcher Alex Cobb was forced to leave the game in the fifth inning after taking a line drive to the head from Eric Hosmer.
As you can see in the video above, just hearing and watching the baseball hit Cobb in the head is difficult for anyone to watch, but luckily he was still moving after falling to the ground when it happened. Cobb was taken off the field on a stretcher and taken to a local hospital–so let’s hope and pray for the best with the Rays pitcher.
Unfortunately, the protection of pitchers has been a hot topic in baseball over the last couple of weeks as we’ve seen too many incidents like this happen over the years. Line drives can happen so quick that pitchers don’t even have enough time to react to the baseball coming towards their face and let’s hope this scary incident doesn’t keep Cobb away from the field for too long.
If you thought the debate about possible protection for pitchers on the mound was intense before–just wait and see how the topic heats up over the next couple of days now that baseball has to deal with another one of these incidents. As mentioned before, this is something in baseball that is happening way more often than it should and you have to wonder how many more times will it happen before something is done about it by the league.
