5 Athletes That Are the Sporting World’s Equivalent Of The Royal Baby
5 Athletes That Are the Sporting World’s Equivalent of Royal Baby
In case you haven’t heard, Prince William and Kate Middleton had a baby boy, which could be the most exciting news story since, well, the Royal Wedding.
It seems that you can’t even turn on CNN without seeing news about the Royal Baby — and don’t even think about turning on the BBC. There have been earthquakes in China, unrest in Egypt and Syria and all kinds of other news-worthy stories than a Royal Baby. However, it seems everyone is enamored with the news of an addition to the British Royal Family to the point that hours are spent just trying to guess names. There are even reports of betting going on based on what the final name will be; George and James seem to be the ones that are considered the top choices by the bookies at the moment. Some sporting teams in the U.K. are even creating a special line of clothing to commemorate his birth.
The media’s obsession with the world’s most talked-about royal family draws an interesting parallel to certain polarizing figures in sports. In sports, there are also athletes that elicit the type of media explosion that the Royal Baby does. These players can do anything, good or bad, and the media will spend the next few months breaking it down and discussing it in every way possible.
Here are five sports stars that are just as polarizing to the media as the Royal Baby. If you have any more suggestions, feel free to comment below.

5. Johnny Manziel
Manziel wouldn’t have made this list a few months ago, but it seems like all the various media outlets do is talk about him. I’m pretty sure every third word on SportsCenter is Manziel. Don’t worry, no one will talk about him again after the SEC opener against Alabama.
4. David Beckham
There may not be a more polarizing figure in all of sports. His addition to the L.A. Galaxy after a successful European career sent shock waves around the U.S. Everyone seemed to know the name Beckham. He even married a Spice Girl. The Beckhams were the celebrity world’s first Jay-Z and Beyonce.
3. Michael Phelps
When you bring gold home to the USA, you become very popular very fast. Come to think of it, his popularity spread almost as fast as a certain picture of him at a college party.
2. LeBron James
James is an amazing athlete. The only thing crazier than his talent is his fans. Say LeBron James and bad in the same sentence on Twitter and Miami Heat fans will hunt you down, while Cleveland Cavaliers fans will worship you.
1. Tim Tebow
Love him or hate him, Tim Tebow is a media darling. If you speak his name three times in the mirror, Skip Bayless will appear.
