Former NFL running back and future Hall-of-Famer LaDainian Tomlinson recently shared one heck of a Rex Ryan story. Tomlinson, now an analyst for the NFL Network, had this to say on how his former head coach once motivated the team during his time with the New York Jets:
“Rex got in front of us, he said, ‘I’m going to set the tempo today, guys,’ he said, ‘I’m going to set the tempo. When I meet Bill Belichick in the center of the field, I’m going to start it off and punch him in the face.’”
Tomlinson added that Ryan was a ‘master motivator’ and that he was great at being able to rally the guys for a big game.
This isn’t too surprising, because while the Jets’ head coach has his share of shortcomings, no one has really ever questioned his ability to get a team fired up. With Ryan, it’s his team against the world, which is the attitude you have to have sometimes in the NFL.
He’ll have to use all the motivational tricks in his bag this Thursday, as the Jets travel to take on the favored New England Patriots on Thursday Night Football. A few weeks ago, no one would have given the Jets a snowball’s chance of beating the Pats on the road. But after week one, it looks like they might have a sliver of hope after all.
