AS Monaco's Eric Abidal Was Offered Liver By Barcelona's Dani Alves

In an interview with Spanish media, the AS Monaco and former Barcelona left back Eric Abidal has revealed Dani Alves offered his own liver for a transplant. The Brazilian Alves had requested to have Abidal’s number 22 shirt this summer, but the Frenchman confirmed that their friendship goes deeper than that:

My history with Dani goes beyond have caught the number 22. When I had to have surgery he wanted to give me his liver. Obviously it could not be because it is a professional footballer. Our relationship goes beyond friendship.

Now this might not seem like particularly interesting news, but it is nice to hear that a footballer of such a high profile was ready to risk his career significantly in order to back a friend, who we have now learned was very close to him.

Due to Abidal’s health, his time at Barcelona came to an eventual close, but he has stated that both sides are on good terms following their parting in a very tough period of his life where he was provided with plenty of support.

It is also interesting that Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola was after the services of Abidal but due to the medical staff at the German club, a deal never went ahead. It just shows how highly he is rated, but how disappointing it is that his health issues negatively affected his playing career.

However, it is great to see Abidal in what he calls his “perfect” state.
