Grant Balfour and the 20 MLB Players Who are Just Flat-Out Jerks
Grant Balfour and the 20 Biggest Jerks in the MLB
Just in case you didn't know, MLB is loaded with jerks. Some guys think they are entitled to acting in such ways because, hey, they make more money than the rest of us. Some guys think they are far better players than they actually are. Lastly, some guys don't have a reason, they just don't like playing nice with the rest of the league -- might have been a childhood with no toys that just made them angry people.
In honor of the recent bench-clearing, trash-talking that followed a Victor Martinez foul ball off of Oakland Athletics closer Grant Balfour, I have compiled a list of 10 MLB players that are just flat-out jerks. Obviously, harsher terms can be used for the guys on this list, but let's keep it family-friendly.
In case you missed the bench-clearing debacle from the Detroit Tigers-Oakland Athletics game in the 2013 MLB Playoffs, here's what happened: Balfour pitched the ball to Martinez who fouled it off into the stands, Martinez looked at Balfour wrong -- apparently -- and Balfour exchanged some heated words with the Tigers designated hitter. It remains to be known just why Martinez was staring at the mound after the foul ball, but I'm sure it wasn't a "death stare" like people think. Sure he should have put his head down and looked for the next pitch, but who made the rules to say "no looking in the pitcher's general direction -- ever"?
Any way you look at it, neither sides were right in the way they acted, leading to a verbal altercation that brought both teams from their respective dugouts and bullpens.
This isn't the first time something like this has ever happened, nor is it the worst example of jerk-like attitude in baseball.
Thanks to that event taking place, we now have a list of 20 of MLB's biggest jerks to look at. Thanks, Grant. Let me know if I missed anyone.
20. Josh Beckett
Josh Beckett just comes off as a condescending jerk and someone who thinks he's better than the competition. Maybe a few years ago. Oh, and he was involved in the whole chicken and beer in the clubhouse mess for the Red Sox.
WARNING: This interview contains profanity.
19. Brandon Phillips
If there is anyone more in love with themselves than Brandon Phillips, then I would not want to meet that person. This guy is just hated around the league.
18. Kevin Youkilis
A fiery player, Youkilis has played for two of the most hated teams in sports. Oh yeah, and he likes beating up on young pitchers.
17. Shane Victorino
Shane Victorino is beloved by Red Sox and Phillies fans, but if you've never had him on your team, the Flyin' Hawaiian can get on your nerves. It's the worst when you see him yelling at and taunting fans.
16. Nyjer Morgan
This guy is as immature as they come and fans of baseball cannot stand his antics. People see him as an immature, trash-talking jerk.
15. Jonathan Papelbon
Papelbon, as well as many closers in baseball, is a fiery character who isn't afraid of anyone -- or so he comes off that way. He has an 'I don't care about you' attitude and a 'say anything' personality. Oh yeah, and he kind of reminds me of Ricky Bobby. Just bad.
14. Brett Myers
He was charged with domestic assault in 2006 when he was seen hitting his wife in public. Just for that, Myers deserves a spot on this list.
WARNING: This interview contains extreme vulgarity.
13. Brian McCann
I don't know what it is, but McCann has to stop trying to be the unwritten rule enforcer of the MLB. On two occasions this year, he has confronted players at home plate after watching their home runs. He just seems like he knows what's best for everyone. Just let the terrible teams hit home runs.
12. Brian Wilson
Sure Wilson is quirky, silly and just flat-out hilarious when he wants to be, but he can also be a huge jerk. He has a sometimes poor attitude and he likes to yell at Giants' front office members.
11. Carlos Zambrano
Zambrano was once a great pitcher for the Cubs, but had run-ins with teammates and a very poor attitude. Hard to find a guy with a worse temper than this guy. Don't come close to him when he's angry, he might punch your lights out.
10. Kyle Farnsworth
Okay, so maybe Farnsworth has cooled down a bit in his old age, but he used to love getting under other players' skin. He would purposely hit players and never back down from a fight. He was the epitome of a jerk back in his day.
9. Fernando Rodney
Rodney is not too well liked outside of the city of Tampa. The hot-tempered closer has an attitude and when you think he's going to give you a pitch to hit, he has no problem brushing you back with some chin music.
8. Grant Balfour
Balfour is known for his "rage" that riles up fans and angers opponents. This guy likes to talk trash even when there is nothing to talk trash about.

7. Delmon Young
He once threw a bat at an umpire during a minor league game. Oh yeah, and he got in trouble for spewing racial slurs at a New York bar not too long ago.
6. Carlos Gomez
He hit a home run off the Braves, watched it fly out of the park and proceeded to talk trash while rounding the bases before chickening out of a fight at home plate. This kid is talented, but has quite the mouth on him. Oh yeah, and the Braves aren't so nice, either. Apparently his beef with the Braves came months before when he was hit by a pitch -- only jerks hold grudges that long.
5. A.J. Pierzynski
A.J. Pierzynski has been voted the most hated player in the league by fellow players. It's obvious why he was voted that as he is seemingly always running his mouth and he's been in the middle of multiple brawls.
4. Bryce Harper
Harper seems to think he owns the major leagues, but the second-year player is far from perfect. He is a talented young player, but with the attitude and arrogance that he portrays, you would think he's the best hitter on the planet. Clown move, bro.
3. Ozzie Guillen
Guillen is one of those outspoken [former] managers that is not afraid of telling it like it is. Unfortunately, he sometimes has diarrhea of the mouth and calls out his own team, fans and boss. Well, this is why he's out of a job. Let the "bleeps" in this video stir your imagination.
2. Ryan Braun
Ryan Braun still claims, to this day, that he never knowingly took steroids. He broke the trust of his own fans and hurt the Brewers organization. Welcome to the jerk club, jerk.
1. Alex Rodriguez
Jerk No. 1 on the list is pretty obvious. Alex Rodriguez is a jerk and a joke. He might be one of the best hitters of all time, but his consumption of steroid and denial of use will forever put an asterisk next to his stat line. This guy still denies using PEDs. What a jerk.
