Todd Helton is a Colorado sports legend and apparently friends with Peyton Manning. The recently retired first baseman spoke with the Denver Post on Wednesday and weighed in on Jim Irsay‘s comments about Manning’s tenure in Indianapolis. In case you’ve been living under a rock, Irsay came across as ungrateful in his comments because he said that he was disappointed that the Indianapolis Colts only won one Super Bowl with Manning at the helm. So with that on his mind, Helton spouted this off:

“I think the guy, just wants to be famous, so he gets one little shot for somebody to know what his name is. To me, that’s just classless. I hope Peyton goes back and steps on their throat. I hope he steps on their neck and doesn’t let up. That’s what I hope for, especially after that idiot, whatever you call him, spouting off his mouth.”

The former slugger added that the comments were riling him up, which is pretty apparent from his tone.

I absolutely loved these words from Helton. He’s been one of many people over the past 24 hours to call out Irsay for sounding like a chump. Even if the owner does feel that way, he chose a horrible time to reveal his thoughts. How about waiting until after the game this Sunday?

The last thing anyone in the NFL wants to do is give Manning more ammo. The guy is driven enough each week to destroy opposing defenses. Now, there’s been more fuel added to his competitive fire. The QB would never admit that Irsay’s comments offended him, and maybe they didn’t, but I have a hard time believing that they sat well with him.
