Shaquille O'Neal and 10 Athletes Who Do Way Too Many Commercials

Ed Szczepanski-USA TODAY Sports

One of the greatest parts about having success as a professional athlete is all of the endorsements that come with it. There are numerous superstars who get a majority of their total income from endorsing products, which is obviously one of the huge perks of having success on the basketball court, football field, baseball diamond, golf course and anywhere else in the world where athletes can shine.

Shaquille O'Neal is one professional athlete in particular who has made more than enough money over the years off the court. The man has been promoting products for decades and it doesn’t appear to be slowing down just because he’s in retirement. In fact, Buick is paying a lot of money to pump out commercials with him to promote the new Buick LaCrosse. Other products Shaq has endorsed over the years are Reebok, Icy Hot, Taco Bell, Vitamin Water, Pepsi and Radio Shack.

There are definitely a couple of athletes who can be seen in more commercials than Shaq these days, but there is no question he’s towards the top of the list. One could even make the case that he’s making more commercials now that he’s in retirement than he did when he was playing at the end of his career.

The fact is fans don’t mind seeing their favorite athletes in commercials, especially if the content is humorous. I have to imagine one of the main reasons people are attracted to the products that Shaq and Peyton Manning endorse is because their commercials are funny.

10. Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan has been out of the game for a while, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t stayed busy. His Airness still brings in a hefty paycheck for all of his endorsements. Even though he hasn’t done too many recent commercials, he can definitely be seen on television promoting Hanes underwear.

9. Eli Manning

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

Quarterback Eli Manning is a prime example of a professional athlete who has faded from the commercial scene due to the fact that he hasn’t performed as well on the gridiron in recent years. However, his two Super Bowl wins have made him a household name, which is why several companies continue to take chances on him. Mostly thanks to his brother, Manning is still relevant in the hilarious DirectTV commercials.

8. Tiger Woods

One would think Tiger Woods would have taken a huge hit in the endorsement department due to his sex scandal a few years ago. However, Woods made $54.5 million in endorsements in 2012 and $65 million in 2013. The golf legend can be seen in commercials for Nike and the United States Golf Association.

7. Derrick Rose

Pat Lovell-USA TODAY Sports

Derrick Rose’s absence from the court last season allowed him more time to spend on making commercials, as Adidas pumped out as many as they could. With the 2013-14 NBA season still fresh, Rose is one of several basketball stars who dominate primetime commercial spots. He can be seen in a brand new NBA Christmas commercial with other hoop stars.

6. Kobe Bryant

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Kobe Bryant is just another athlete who has made a fortune in endorsements over the years. The basketball icon has brought in $34 million off the court alone in 2013. Nike has been coming out with some new commercials starring Bryant, while he also can be seen in Turkish Airlines TV spots.

5. Drew Brees

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

Drew Brees was doing commercials prior to his 2009 Super Bowl win, but there is no question the victory propelled him to stardom. The signal caller can be seen in commercials for Vicks VapoRub, Chase, and even a Tide TV spot with his family. In fact, Brees’ kids can frequently be seen in his commercials.

4. Aaron Rodgers

Bruce Kluckhohn-USA TODAY Sports

Aaron Rodgers is seen everywhere on television these days with his hilarious State Farm Discount Double Check commercials. Whether Clay Matthews, B.J. Raji or the SNL superfans are involved, the ads have not disappointed. Rodgers also does commercials for Associated Bank and Gruber Law Offices in Wisconsin.

3. Shaquille O’Neal

Along with Buick, Shaq can be seen endorsing New Jersey Republican Governor Chris Christie and a cream soda called “Soda Shaq.”

2. LeBron James

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

LeBron James is one of the most recognizable athletes in the world. For that reason, it’s no surprise that he is constantly seen in commercials. James has been in numerous ads since his arrival in the NBA, with his hilarious The LeBrons taking the cake in my opinion. He also can be seen in several Nike ads and a commercial for the video game NBA 2K14.

1. Peyton Manning

Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sports

I can’t imagine fans expected to see anyone besides Manning at the top spot on the countdown. The superstar quarterback appears in every commercial imaginable. The best part is his ads are incredibly entertaining and hilarious. Whether it’s Papa Johns, MasterCard or DirectTV, Manning rarely disappoints.
