With the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi set to begin in a little over a month, countries all over the world are completing the final preparations in training and getting set to take off for Russia to begin competing Feb. 6. The USA has a lot of familiar faces and some not so much. The athlete that will be profiled in this piece is the speed skater known as Heather Richardson.

Richardson just made news a few days ago as she became the World Sprint Champion in Salt Lake City, Utah which marked the second straight year that she won the event. At only 24 years old, Richardson made her mark in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver when she took 6th place in the Women’s 500m competition as well as 9th and 16th in the 1000m and 1500m respectively. She holds the world record for sprint points in her career which is a remarkable feat.

Because of the lack of popularity in the speed skating sport, Richardson is not quite known to those unfamiliar with the event itself, but she will be a dark horse entering the Olympics this year. Look for her to compete at a high level and by the end of it all become well-known by more individuals who will be tuning into the events at home. She is also quite a favorite to take home a few medals in her events in the Winter Olympics.

Fun Facts About Heather Richardson:

  1. Richardson’s most memorable moment came just a few days ago when she won her second World Sprint Championship. What made it so memorable? She was able to win it on home ice. Her current residence is West Valley, Utah which is a suburb of Salt Lake City.
