Jamaican Bobsled Team Qualifies; Will They Be Able To Attend?

According to Sochi officials, the Jamaican bobsled duo of sled driver Winston Watts and brakeman Marvin Dixon qualified for the 2014 Sochi Olympics. The qualification brings back memories of the 1980 Jamaican bobsled team and the movie Cool Runnings that got the phrase “Feel the rhythm! Feel the rhyme! Get on up, it’s bobsled time” stuck in our head. However, it seems like the Jamaican duo might not be able to due to financial issues.

The team qualified for their first Olympics since 2002 and they need help to reach Sochi. Due to travel costs and lack of financial resources, Jamaica needs to raise $80,000. In fact, they have started a Indeigogo fundraiser in hopes of raising the required funds.

It would be a travesty if Jamaica could not participate due to financial troubles. They qualified fairly through hard work and effort, so it would be shame if their Olympics dreams were shattered due to something beyond of the athletes’ control. Hopefully, they will find the necessary money. Maybe a big corporation will foot their bill, or the IOC can step in.

Regardless, many will be rooting for Jamaica as they hope to continue their Olympic dreams in Sochi. Each Olympic year provides many feel-good storylines. This year’s Jamaican bobsled team is the latest one, and it would be great if they can fight for the gold medal on the bobsled course instead of not being able to participate. If they are able to go, maybe a Cool Runnings sequel could be in the works.
