2014 Winter Olympics: 10 Interesting Facts About Ashley Wagner

The news came in recently that top USA figure skater Ashley Wagner would represent the United States at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. She was thought to be one of the front runners for a spot for most of the last couple of years because of numerous top performances. While some suggest that she should not have been chosen because of a slightly disappointing performance recently in Boston, she deserves the spot as much as anyone.

Every Olympic athlete works their butts off to get where they are. Wagner is no different in that respect. However she doesn’t just deserve the spot because of that. She doesn’t get the spot because she has a ton of sponsors or because she has a pretty smile either. Regardless of what some may say, she got the spot and deserves the spot because she has been near the top of the figure skating world for the last two years.

One single performance does not become the only criteria for the USA to choose which skaters make the games. No mudslinging is needed here against other skaters but the fact is few have been better in the world than Wagner in the last couple of years and no one has been better overall over that time among USA women’s skaters.

We didn’t come here to talk about controversial things however. This is to be a fun and informative article. Most importantly above all else, Wagner seems to be by all accounts a swell person and a solid citizen. Kudos to her for making the games this time around. There might be several cool things you don’t know about her though and going into Sochi, it seems you should know them.

This might not seem all that interesting on the surface but this wasn’t early in her skating life; it was after she had already had a great deal of success. She chose to move to California and switch to John Nicks as a coach. It was a big move for her career obviously but it wasn’t cheap. She did what she had to do to make herself better.

Wagner won the United States Championships in 2012 and again in 2013. This would be one of the major reasons why I suggested she well deserved the spot on the USA team. Anyone remember Kwan? Yeah I do too and Wagner is the first since Kwan to pull off this feat.

This is interesting to me anyway but then again who doesn’t enjoy laser tag? If nothing else it goes to show she’s just a normal American girl who happens to be an extremely gifted athlete.

1 – She Likes Pie

This could fall into the category of ‘who doesn’t?’ as well I suppose. Still, though I enjoy a nice apple pie or pumpkin pie now and then, I don’t search constantly small diners all along the way looking for the best of the best pies in any area. Hopefully the Gold she is about to win in Sochi will help that search go easier.

the gold she is about to win? NO WAY! Ashley is a nice skater but she will not win gold and will probably not make the podium. Most likely on the podium: Julia Lipnitskaia, Mao Asada, Yuna Kim. Maybe on podium: Carolina Kostner, Adelina Sotnikova, Gracie Gold, Polina Edmuns. All of these skaters – and maybe a few others – are leaps and bounds above Ashley. Sorry – but no way she can catch them – still, she does deserve to go…
