The Netherlands have been dominating their rivals in the skating competitions thus far in the Sochi Olympics, and they showed it once again in the men’s 500m speed skating event.
Michel Mulder, his brother Ronald Mulder and Jan Smeekens were the three Dutch representatives in the event, and they delivered from the start of the competition. The three skaters finished in the top 10 in the first race, and they stepped their game up in the second part of the event, sweeping the race as they finished in the top three places.
Michel Mulder had the best showing with a 69.31 combined time, and Smeekens finished second, only 0.1 seconds behind. Ronald Mulder ended up third with a 69.46 time.
Mo Tae Bum, current World Champion and the gold medal winner in Vancouver 2010 Olympics, couldn’t stop the Dutch squad and finished the event in fourth place, 0.38 seconds behind Michel Mulder. It was a dominant performance from Team Holland and they are the deserved winners of the event after showing they are a few steps ahead of the rest of the world.
With three more medals, the Netherlands are now at top in the medals’ leaderboard and they keep showing they are a force to be reckoned with in Sochi. They will surely fight until the last day for the first spot in the total medal count, and they have strong chances of maintaining their top spot if their competitors keep performing like they have done so far.
