Friday was a tough day at the 2014 Winter Olympics for the United States.

Early in the day, there was triumph as American skier Mikaela Shiffrin took an alpine skiing gold medal for the women's slalom. Shiffrin held off the field after taking the lead in the opening run and beating out Austrian skiers Marlies Schild and Kathrin Zettel in the finals. It's been touch-and-go for the U.S. in the alpine events, and this win moves things further towards 'success' for USA Skiing.

Curling wrapped up their tournament, seeing Canada take the gold with a 9-3 win over Great Britain. Canadian skip Brad Jacobs went 84 percent overall as his team humiliated the British in eight ends. It was so bad, in fact, that Great Britain didn't have a single end with more than one point scored the whole match.

Late in the day's competition, the United States rallied to take a silver medal in the men's 5000m short track relays. While the entire team performed strong overall, nobody was touching Russia as they set an Olympic Record with their 6:42.100 time.

Yet, the biggest moment of all was in the men's hockey tournament as the U.S. men faced their other arch-rivals, Canada. In a rematch of the gold medal game from Vancouver in 2010, the semifinal game determined who would meet Sweden for this tournament's gold medal game. As much as Team USA had been completely dominant over every other team for most of the tournament, Canada had their number. Puck possession was completely denied and the Americans were unable to put any kind of offense together, eventually falling 1-0 in regulation.

The U.S. now faces Finland tomorrow in the bronze medal game. Which is still a medal.

All results are final unless otherwise noted.
