Matt Lauer Makes Gold Medal-Caliber Joke About Bob Costas' Eye at Sochi Olympics

It hasn’t been the easiest of winters for Bob Costas. Okay, he is rich and he got to cover the 2014 Winter Olympics and got paid to do so. Sure, he gets to travel across the nation — and in this case, the world — to cover events and some top sporting events, but he has pink eye. I know, the worst has finally happened to Costas.

Well, the host of nine Olympic games and NBC Sports television sportscaster has been the brunt of many jokes about his recent pink eye situation. Yes, he was being made fun of for his lack of perfect eyesight and the infection that had swept the nation.

The Today Show‘s Matt Lauer poked fun at the recent unfortunate situation by asking him on live TV when Costas was heading home from the Olympics. Here’s what happened:

As you can see, Costas liked the joke enough to just laugh it off because he had probably heard it for a while. He was even wearing sunglasses to cover his eyes from the devastating Sochi sun — or maybe he still has pink eye residue.

Either way, Lauer asking Costas if he was taking the redeye flight home on Monday had to be a joke that is worthy of a gold medal.

For those of you who don’t get the joke because you don’t know what the redeye is, it’s a late flight that people take late at night and arrives early in the morning. It is named after a “tiring red eye” that passengers might get for flying late at night — but it might be cheaper.

All seriousness aside, this is the funniest joke you’ll hear all week.
