Top 20 Athlete Reality Show Appearances
Top 20 Athlete Reality Show Appearances
Most reality shows are a combination of he-said, she-said subplots and a do-or-die athletic competition. Does this sound familiar? Since most team sports are basically reality shows, it is little wonder that so many athletes go on to quasi-successful careers in this arena.
There's something for everybody. Many athletes still yearn for the spotlight after their playing days are over, and a reality show fits the bill perfectly. Getting paid to go somewhere and have people drool over you is even more enticing. Membership on a professional sports team automatically qualifies a person as at least a C-list celebrity, so the show's producers hope that the athlete's name may bump viewership ahead of the "Full House" rerun on Nick at Night. And the regular contestants can regale their grandchildren with tales of the day they met Miles Austin in person.
There's a very, very long list of current and former athletes who have cashed in on the reality TV craze. Plenty have crashed an burned along the way, while others have been somewhat successful. Some are trying to stay in the public eye, some are just in it for a laugh, some are trying to manipulate the media and some have lives that are so messed up we cannot help but watch, like a bad traffic accident at rush hour or Ashlee Simpson trying to do a live performance.
From the surreal to the subdued, this list has it all. Here are the top 20 athlete reality show appearances known to man.
20. Apolo Anton-Ohno
The man responsible for America's love-affair with speedskating is a "Dancing With The Stars" winner.
19. Rob Gronkowski
The future of NFL players in reality TV is assured as the Gronkowski's are in talks to bare all in their own series.
18. Tim Wakefield
In "The Next Knuckler," Wakefield tried to turn washed-up athletes into knuckleball pitchers. This brings us to...
17. Tim Tebow
Tebow appeared in an unforgettable episode of "The Biggest Loser." Insert your own joke here.
16. Terrell Owens
Owens appeared in "Stars in Danger" and, of course, "The T.O. Show." Here he is in his natural habitat: running his mouth near a microphone.
One of the world's most famous soccer players once had his own reality show but now seems content to sit at press conference tables.
14. Pete Rose
Rose appeared in several episodes of "Pete Rose: Hits and Mrs." Do you get it? Huh? Do you get it?
13. Ndamukong Suh
The big guy jumping into a pool on "Splash" has become a YouTube sensation.
12. Rick Fox
Fox is a "Dancing With The Stars" veteran. Despite being something of a journeyman, Fox finished his career with three championship rings, which is three more than you'll ever have.
11. Mark Cuban
The Dallas Mavericks' owner is not technically an athlete, but anyone who has lots of money and his own reality show deserves a spot in this hallowed slideshow.
10. Lamar Odom
Here's one of the few times that this reality TV star and erstwhile Kardashian-in-law handled a ball while he was in a Dallas uniform (cue rimshot).
9. Lawrence Taylor
Another "DWTS" washout, Taylor has apparently put on a bit of weight since his playing days.
8. Jose Canseco
Canseco appeared on "The Surreal Life" and "Celebrity Apprentice." His other gig as an MMA fighter didn't work out quite as well.
7. Kris Humphreys
Humphreys almost literally had his 15 minutes of fame as Kim Kardashian's boy-toy husband.
6. Jerry Rice
During their careers, Rice and other players develop excellent footwork, which translates well to dancing reality shows.
5. Evander Holyfield
Holyfield has apparently put that disappointing "DWTS" performance behind him. If you're a VIP at a Playboy party, life must be pretty good.
4. Eric Decker
God bless the USA where a nondescript wideout with a bad haircut can snag a hot fiancee and his own reality TV show.
3. Emmitt Smith
Smith gets a spot because of his "DWTS" prowess and his moving performance in that hair-dye commercial.
2. Chad Ochocinco
Ochocinco, nee Johnson, is a veteran from such shows as "Dancing With The Stars" and "The Ultimate Catch." For those keeping score at home, this is the mugshot from arrest number three.
1. Dwight Gooden
Gooden appeared in that timeless classic "Celebrity Rehab." His mother must have been so proud.
