If you were lucky enough to start your video game career on an NES, then there’s a very good chance you played Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out. To say that the game is a classic, just doesn’t do it enough justice. MTPO is a fantastic game to this very day. I don’t care what kind of graphics it has, it’s just flat out fun to play. When it comes to video games, that’s really all that matters.

So with this classic game in mind, we turn to Smooth McGroove. Who in the heck is Smooth McGroove? He’s a user on YouTube who creates one-man a capella versions of video game theme songs.

Check out Mr. McGroove in action with the classic theme from MTPO:

I think it’s safe to say that this guy has a lot of time on his hands. But hey, I’m not complaining. This rendition of the MTPO theme is straight up awesome.

When it comes to the game itself, it’s not really a question of if it’s one of the greatest sports video games of all time, it’s a question of where does it rank on the all time list? It’s a tough call, but I’d have to say top five. There’s no question that MTPO belongs in the top 10, but you can make a good case for top five.

MTPO just goes to show that modern day simulation games aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. Video games were originally designed to help people escape from reality. Nowadays, games try to be like real life. Try to figure that one out…
