Athletes have a routine that they stick to in order to prepare for a game or match. It doesn’t matter if the athlete is a professional or in high school, there is still a routine that must be had. Most routines are rather standard, while others are just plain strange. Check out 15 of the weirdest game day routines of athletes.

French defender Laurent Blanc would famously kiss his goalkeeper’s head for good luck prior to each match during the 1998 World Cup. It turned into a routine for the entire team, as each player would do the same before every match. It seemed to work as France went on to win the World Cup that year.

There are several athletes who are musically talented, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to rock out before taking the field. The exception lies with Oakland Athletes starting pitcher A.J. Griffin, who apparently chills out with his guitar.

Wade Boggs was one of those players who would never shy away from routine. The former New York Yankee would start his batting practice at precisely 5:17 p.m., field exactly 150 balls in the infield, and then run wind sprints at exactly 7:17 p.m. prior to every single night game.

Boggs’ routine may seem precise, but that doesn’t even compare to Rafael Nadal’s daily habits. The tennis star takes a cold shower exactly 45 minutes before every match, and he makes sure the labels of the beverage he’s drinking from is pointing towards the end of the court that he will be playing on. He also has to have his opponent stand up and take the court before he does. Oh yeah, he also uses a towel to wipe himself off after every point.

This isn’t all that weird of a routine, although watching massive football players doing the downward dog in their pre-game warm-ups is a little funny. Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson says that yoga is what keeps his hamstrings loose. Maybe other players should give it a shot considering the numbers Johnson puts up each season.

Some golfers have a routine with their clothing in which they must be wearing the same shirt and pants on a specific day. The person who made this routine famous is none other than Tiger Woods. The superstar golfer makes sure that he’s wearing a red shirt every single time he plays on Sundays in a tournament.

Boggs had to have chicken one way or another before every game, Brian Urlacher enjoyed exactly two chocolate chip cookies before he stepped on the gridiron, and Rajon Rondo washes down his sushi with Gatorade. When it comes down it though, a majority of athletes stick to the classic peanut butter and jelly.

NBA legend Michael Jordan wore his UNC college basketball shorts underneath his Chicago Bulls shorts every single time he took the court. Philadelphia Flyers goalkeeper Pelle Lindbergh did the same, except for him it was the same orange t-shirt. Meanwhile, Jason Terry wears authentic shorts from his opponent when he goes to bed the night before a game. And who could forget that Jason Giambi wore a gold thong to get out of a slump.

Turk Wendell was one of the more superstitious players to ever step foot on a baseball field. But even the most superstitious players draw a line. Among the many things that Wendell did during his playing days, he would wear animal parts as trophies from a recent hunt. More specifically, he had a necklace of teeth from wild animals that he would wear.

Soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo makes sure that he gets a haircut right before every game. The reason is because he’s afraid if he doesn’t he won’t score a goal.

Using the restroom is a routine for every athlete before a game. However, it’s rare to go in the same spot every single time. Apparently, that’s exactly what John Terry used to do. If he didn’t pee in the exact same urinal prior to each match, bad things were going to happen on the field.

Speaking of pee, Moises Alou was old school, which meant he didn’t wear batting gloves. However, the baseball player knew he had to toughen up his hands before every game so that he could grip the bat. I guess the only way to do that was to pee on his hands, something he did 162 times a year.

There’s nothing fun about getting slapped across the face. However, if it means the difference between having a good game and a bad game, I suppose it’s necessary. Former Jacksonville Jaguars defensive tackle John Henderson would have one of the team trainers slap him hard across the face a few times before he took the field.

Washington Capitals’ Alexander Ovechkin is one of the more prolific scorers in the NHL. Apparently, a lot of it has to do with his game day routine of having sex. That’s right, Ovechkin has to have sex before and after every game.

I have to imagine LeBron James started the chalk toss because I can’t remember anyone else every doing it, although, Kevin Garnett did start the powder toss. Prior to every game, James scoops some chalk dust into his hand and tosses it in the air. It became such a big hit that his fans will sometimes copy him in the tradition.
