Despite being projected to be one of the better teams in the EFLI’s inaugural season, the Kolkata Vipers struggled in Season 1. The defense gave up too many points on too many occasions and the offense was unable to make up the difference. With all that said, however, there were plenty of players who showed they have the potential to be stars in the league.
Ronit Banda showed lots of promise as he led the league in passing yards (431). The biggest drawback to his production was the six interceptions he threw in comparison to just two touchdowns. He was the least accurate quarterback in Season 1, but the quantity of yardage shows promise for the young athlete. If the Vipers can work on their chemistry during the offseason, expect Banda to lead the league in passing yards again.
Santosh Sandri helped lead the Vipers’ ground attack, finishing the season with 123 yards on 23 carries. He averaged 5.3 yards per carry. Sandri showed plenty of promise in Season 1, but will have to find the end zone in Season 2 if he hopes to have a long career in the league.
Boini Yadav was quarterback Ronit Banda’s favorite target all season as he finished Season 1 with 149 yards on 12 completions. Unfortunately, Yadav finished the season with no touchdowns. Despite not finding the end zone, Yadav proved he is someone to be relied upon when attacking aerially. As this Kolkata roster learns the game, expect Yadav to not only rack up the yards, but also put up points on the scoreboard in Season 2.
Sandeep Reddy was the lone bright spot on a defensive unit that had very little consistency. Reddy finished Season 1 with one interception that he returned for 20 yards. Those were 20 of the 24 yards the Vipers managed to get defensively. Success on defense will have to come as a team, not individually, but Reddy showed his team and the league that he definitely has the skill to be a defensive presence in Season 2.
Rajib Mondal was one of the best kickers in the league in Season 1 as he averaged 42.5 yards on punts (best in the EFLI). He even took over QB duties for a few plays, completing two of the three passes he threw. As the Kolkata Vipers continue to work on their fundamentals, it’s clear that Mondal is one of the few on the roster who are ready to compete for wins in Season 2.
