5 Sport Figures Who Should Be Considered For The Lead Role In "True Detective"

Last Tuesday night, the Internet was abuzz with the rumor of Jessica Chastain being offered the lead role for season two of the hit show, “True Detective.” The reception has been extremely positive amongst fans, so it got me thinking: what sport figures would fans love to see on this show?

My list is based on the lead characters from season one combined with under-the-radar, “go about their business” superstar sport figures.

5. Chase Utley

He is possibly the most underrated superstar over the past decade. Throughout his 12-year career, Utley has never taken a play off and when healthy, he is still proving to be a top-three-second baseman in baseball. Utley still prepares himself rigorously on the field, as well as off the field in the film room. I would love to see Utley take on Matthew McConaughey’s role, and try to break down every minor case detail the way Cohle did.

4. Gregg Popovich

Forget about the fact that essentially any washed up player can simply head to San Antonio and revive his career. Forget about the fact, that his team has been one of the two most dominating teams in the NBA since 1999. I simply want to see Gregg Popovich as a lead in this show just to hear his press conferences, updating the case he is working on.

3. Peyton Manning

The most obvious guy on this list. Peyton’s superstardom and winning percentage have not gone unnoticed, but his work ethic and effect on his teammates do. Although Cohle and Hart had their differences, they still made a fine team because they were both leaders. There may be no better leader in sports than Peyton Manning, and lets face it, he has the perfect southern accent for the show.

2. Tim Duncan

To be honest, I see him as a lead detective, but only if he is paired with Popovich. At the age of 38, Duncan is an enigma of a NBA player. Centers who have logged as many minutes throughout their careers as Duncan have not been as big of a contributor to a championship-caliber team as Duncan is to the San Antonio Spurs. Combined with Popovich’s tutelage, I have little doubt Duncan would be able to solve a murder-mystery.

Kelly absolutely belongs on this list, and his out-of-the-box thinking is why. In his first season with the Philadelphia Eagles, Kelly had many ups mixed in with some downs, but proved he was able to adjust on the fly. His brain does not work the same way as other NFL coaches, and I would love to see him put his methods to use as a lead detective on the small screen.
