15 Awesome Athletes Who Only Exist on the Big Screen

Awesome Athletes

The best part about sports movies are the fictional athletes. They are able to do things that athletes in the real world simply can’t do, which makes for very entertaining films. These aren’t necessarily the best fictional athletes to ever appear in movies, but they are definitely 15 awesome athletes who only exist on the big screen.

Movie: The Karate Kid
If you haven’t figured it out, I’m not referring to the Jaden Smith version. “The Karate Kid” was a huge movie back in the 1980s. Ralph Macchio became a big deal, while awesome phrases, such as “wax on, wax off,” were created. It also gave us Mr. Miyagi.

Movie: Slap Shot
“Slap Shot” is a fantastic hockey movie that has several awesome characters. In my opinion, the best part of the film is by far and away the Hanson Brothers. They may be a little slow in the head, but that doesn’t stop them from knocking the snot out of every player that they come into contact with on the ice.

Movie: Major League
Willie Mays Hays hits like Mays and runs like Hayes. His ability to steal bases at will, even when the other team has a good idea that he’s about to, is amazing. Once he finally found a way to actually hit the ball for average, he became a stellar player who helped the Cleveland Indians be put back on the map.

Movie: Major League
It takes Rick ‘Wild Thing’ Vaughn time to find his accuracy, but it’s worth it because of his cannon for an arm. The misfit pitcher beats to his own drum, which is why fans love him. He helped make the Indians relevant again while making new friends in the process.

Movie: Happy Gilmore
Happy Gilmore is a wacky character in an even wackier film. Regardless, Adam Sandler’s spin on the golf movie is thoroughly entertaining. His ability to crush the ball and defy all odds by winning tournaments is astounding. The best part is he’s doing it all to help his grandma.

Movie: Talladega Nights
If you want an awesome fictional athlete, look no further than NASCAR driver Ricky Bobby. “Talladega Nights” isn’t Will Ferrell’s best film. However, Bobby is a unique character who knows how to get the job done by always driving fast. His motto of “if you’re not first, you’re last” allows him to win, even if that means literally running to the finish line.

9. Paul Crewe

Movie: The Longest Yard
Let me be clear, this is Burt Reynolds’ Paul Crewe, not Adam Sandler’s version. Crewe was an amazing professional quarterback who gets sent to prison. There, the warden forces him to put together a team of prisoners to take on the prison guards. If Crewe wants an early release, he must throw the game. It’s not your typical football movie, but that’s what makes it good. Not to mention, Reynolds kills it as Crewe.

Movie: The Replacements
“The Replacements” is an underrated football film starring Keanu Reeves as Shane Falco. The quarterback takes a gang of misfit replacement players and gives them an opportunity to shine in the game they all love. Even though they will have to return to their miserable lives, Falco allowed his teammates to have one day in the sun.

7. Roy McAvoy

Movie: Tin Cup
“Tin Cup” is a great golf movie, and Roy McAvoy is the best fictional professional golfer on the big screen. His ability to take the hard route in order to get ahead is remarkable, even if it costs him the U.S. Open in the end. He’s hardnosed, stubborn, and can swing a golf club like nobody’s business.

Movie: Jerry Maguire
Rod Tidwell was a fast talker who always managed to get his point across in a unique way. He was an emotional player who only wanted the world to see his talents. Oh yeah, and he wanted to get paid a lot of money because he thought he was the greatest whoever was.

Movie: The Wrestler
Mickey Rourke plays a very convincing wrestler in the film “The Wrestler.” He was so good that he was nominated for an Oscar for his performance. Randy ‘The Ram’ Robinson may have been past his prime, but that didn’t stop him from giving up on his dream of becoming a relevant wrestler again. He was passionate about the sport and he never allowed the entertainment to seep out of the show.

Movie: Goon
If you have never seen “Goon,” go on Netflix and watch it right now. It’s an amazing movie about an outcast who finds his niche as a goon in hockey. Sean William Scott hits it out of the park as Doug Glatt, a softhearted man who carries a mean right hook.

Movie: The Sandlot
“The Sandlot” is one of my favorite sports movies of all time. As a kid, I could never get enough of it. Maybe that’s because I enjoyed playing pickup games with my friends too. Of all the amazing characters in the movie, and there are many, Benny ‘The Jet’ Rodriguez is the best. Everyone wanted to be him, in and out of the film. The guy defeated the beast and hit the cover off a baseball. Enough said.

2. Roy Hobbs

Movie: The Natural
“The Natural” was an outstanding baseball film that starred Robert Redford as Roy Hobbs. The mystery surrounding Hobbs and his magical bat that was cut from a tree that was struck by lightning intrigues everyone. “…there goes Roy Hobbs, the best there ever was in this game.”

Movie: Rocky Franchise
There is no better fictional athlete than Rocky Balboa. If you think otherwise, then you haven’t seen enough of the Rocky movies. Rocky’s fascinating career spanned six films, with the possibility of more to come. Clearly, the first one was the best. However, each film had its moments.
