After signing a contract with the Sacramento Kings Thursday night, Sim Bhullar became the first player of Indian descent in the NBA. Now that he's on the team and has a place in the league, what's next? Here are five reasons why Bhullar will make an impact on the game of basketball, both on and off the court.

A backup role for the Sacramento Kings is the perfect situation for a project like Bhullar to develop. He has no pressure to perform immediately, and has the opportunity to see the pro game up close and personal. Sometimes experience and exposure is everything. In return for the opportunity to develop into a productive player, Bhullar gives the Kings an international reach unlike any other. All of India will now support the Kings.

Sim's size is essentially a project that has the potential to pay large dividends. How well the Kings can develop and mobilize a player of his size will indicate how worthwhile such projects are in the future. If all goes as planned, Sim's brother may be next. Tanveer Bhullar, born in 1995, is a Freshman at New Mexico State University. At 7'3", 335 lbs, Tanveer has NBA scouts just as interested as they were in older brother, Sim.

India has never been known for its athletics. Despite its rapidly improving sports landscape, very few foreigners think about sports and India together. Bhullar's impact in the NBA may be tough to project, but his story is already pure motivation for youth in India. He's living proof that an Indian can play basketball, and do so at the highest level.

Not only will the Sacramento Kings gain fans in all of India, but their appeal as the visiting team on away games will increase substantially as well. Bhullar and his size will not only attract fans - especially Indian fans - around the country, but as a Canadian-Indian, his return to Toronto will also create some buzz. For a team that is still looking for proper direction, Bhullar's marketability is a much-needed advantage.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver made it clear from the moment he took over the NBA that expansion into India was a No. 1 priority. Just as the expansion into China was aided by the success of Yao Ming, penetrating the Indian market with basketball will be largely impacted by Sim Bhullar. Looking at it from a purely business angle, the NBA needs Bhullar just as much as he needs them. Why? There are more than 1 billion people in the untapped market.
