Professional athletes have all sorts of different career choices once they decide their playing days are over. Most of them decide to go into broadcasting or sports journalism, while others take a more blue-collar approach. Then there are the athletes who decide acting is what they want to pursue. Here’s a look at 15 athletes who are destined for careers in Hollywood.
From his crazy partying, cocky attitude and inability to act in a mature fashion, quarterback Johnny Manziel has proven that he could handle the Hollywood lifestyle if given the opportunity.
Dwight Howard appears to be always having fun. His big smile has become just as much a part of him as his dominance on the basketball court. Howard was fantastic in a “SportsCenter” commercial a few years back, which proves he has the chops to act. Don’t be surprised if he is at least a NBA commentator when his playing days are over.
Right out of high school, it was hard for Bryce Harper not to be full himself considering everything he had accomplished at such a young age. Even though Harper has calm down a bit in that area, he still flashes signs of being cocky. Once again, this is something Hollywood thrives on.
LeBron James is notorious for flopping. What’s so impressive is how he rarely ever gets called for it. I’m not sure if that’s because he’s such a great actor or he just so happens to be the best player in the league, which is why the refs protect him. Either way, video of his flops should be shown to high school acting students.
Dez Bryant excels at his work when the cameras are on, just as actors do. However, he also has no problem whining when he doesn’t get his way, as evidence of the Packers-Cowboys game last season. Bryant basically has the attitude of a typical type of actor, which is why he would fit right in with people in Hollywood.
Clay Matthews is from Southern California and he acts the part. Whenever the cameras are on him, he’s always trying to do something to keep the attention on him. There’s certainly nothing wrong with that because it’s a big reason why he racks up the sacks during an NFL season.
Brian Wilson is an eccentric fellow who loves the attention. More importantly, he isn’t ashamed of how he looks or acts, which is definitely an attribute a person must have if they want to survive in Hollywood.
With Steve Nash’s basketball career coming to an end very soon, he needs to figure out what he wants to do in his second career. Although his work as a philanthropist is fantastic, Nash is far too talented to stop there. He seems too nervous in front of the camera to be an actor, but the fact that he directed the ESPN 30 for 30 film “Into the Wild” proves that he could handle a role behind the camera.
Alex Morgan is sweet, incredibly good looking and has the girl next-door appearance. She’s basically America’s sweetheart, which means she will have no problem finding a job in Hollywood once her successful soccer career is over.
Most athletes need that second career after retirement to keep themselves going financially. However, Derek Jeter certainly won’t need to do that because he’s an incredibly wealthy man. Regardless, the job offers will be endless, as everyone will want a piece of one of the greatest baseball players to ever live. Not to mention, Jeter has proven to be a talented actor as evidence of his stint on “SNL” and “Seinfeld.”
Defensive end Jared Allen has the perfect mold of a comedic actor. Even though he doesn’t seem to have the Hollywood look, his raw sense of humor is perfect for a funny, entertaining television show. His small role in “Jackass 3” proved that he could be funny off the cuff.
Tim Tebow continues to work out every day so that his dream of playing in the NFL doesn’t vanish completely. Tebow is a polarizing figure who everyone seems to have an opinion about. For the most part, he is very well liked, but of course, there are also the haters. Even though he would prefer to play football, there’s no denying that he has the perfect mold to have a successful career in Hollywood.
Cornerback Richard Sherman is loud, obnoxious and can back up his smack talk with stellar play on the gridiron. More importantly, the man loves the camera and the camera loves him. He’s quick to think on his toes with a microphone in his face, which means that improv could be exactly what’s in store for him.
Tom Brady is married to a supermodel, has incredibly famous friends, is well liked by everyone who meets him and he’s actually shown talent as an actor in an episode of HBO’s “Entourage.” Brady is pretty much already living the Hollywood lifestyle while playing quarterback for the Patriots. Even though money won’t be an issue, working in Hollywood is definitely in his future.
No one should be surprised to see Peyton Manning at No. 1 on this list. He has proven to be one of the funniest athletes alive from his stint on SNL to his various hilarious commercials. One of the biggest reasons why he’s destined for a career in Hollywood is because he knows when it’s time to have fun and when it’s time to get down to business. Whether it’s broadcasting, acting or producing, Manning will have no problem finding work.
