India came out on top by 3 wickets in Ranchi to finish up the five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka 5-0. Virat Kohli finished the final match with 139 not out, leading India to victory and the overall No. 1 spot in ICC ODI rankings.

Following Rohit Sharma's 264 earlier in the series, Kohli passed 1,000 runs for 2014, a milestone also reached by Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews.

With Angelo Mathews leading the way, Sri Lanka batted first in the final ODI match, hitting 286 for eight. Mathews, also 139 not out, hit 10 sizes and six fours, marking his maiden ODI century.

Most impressive was the fact that Sri Lanka even survived the 50 overs. They had done that just one in the series before the final match. For India, a tougher test was hoped for as the squad prepares for the upcoming World Cup in 2015.

After starting 14 for two, Kohli and Ambati Rayudu (59) led a solid stretch of play, combining for a 136-run partnership. With only three wickets left, India needed 47 runs in the final five overs of the match.

Kohli delivered as needed, partnering with Patel (17) for a 57-run stretch to cement the victory.
