Professional athletes are peculiar people to begin with. Then there are the athletes who take it a step further with their crazy ideas, whether it is for pure fun or the promotion of a product. These 15 athletes had so much personality that an alter ego was born.

Alter Ego: Pierre
Pierre is JaVale McGee’s alter ego who is mostly featured on Twitter. The self-proclaimed innovator of the retweet and the finger mustache enjoys referring to himself in the third person. Pierre is the cool, laidback side while McGee is the beast no one wants to face on the court, or so McGee says.

Alter Ego: Uncle Drew
Kyrie Irving’s Uncle Drew is one of the best alter egos the sports world has seen in some time. Whether it’s staged or not, the concept of Uncle Drew and friends taking on players in street ball is awesome. The chapters always start with Irving dressed up as the old Uncle Drew. He starts out playing bad, but then he turns on the skills and dominates the competition.

Alter Ego: Wes
Many of the athletes on this list came up with alter egos for a brand. That is the case with Kevin Love’s character Wes for a Pepsi Max commercial. Even though it is to promote Pepsi, it doesn’t make the alter ego any less funny. The elder Wes teamed up with Irving’s Uncle Drew to take down some younger players in a game of street ball.

Alter Ego: Shaquita
Shaquille O’Neal has so many alter egos that it’s hard to keep count. By far, one his best is Shaquita, Shaq’s female alter ego who loves to rock out to some Beyoncé on Halloween. Shaq is all about having fun, and his Shaquita character is all the evidence necessary to know that to be true.

11. Blake Griffin

Alter Ego: Griffin Force
It seems that Blake Griffin’s KIA Motors commercials are hit or miss. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of Griffin Force, Griffin’s superhero alter ego who fights crime. Even though there is a certain level of creativity, it is one of the more boring alter egos on this list.

10. Vince Carter

Alter Ego: Dr. Funk
Harnessing the 1970s street ball in Harlem, Vince Carter’s Dr. Funk emerges from the chanting crowd to put way with the competition. The purpose of the character was to promote the Nike Shox shoes. But, what was simply meant to be a shoe commercial turned into something special, as Dr. Funk became a fan favorite.

Alter Ego: Jerry Ricecake
Even though Jerry Rice’s character Jerry Ricecake was only briefly shown in a continuation of Deion Sanders’ Leon Sandcastle commercial, it was still a memorable moment. A big reason for that is the outrageous hairdo Ricecake sports at the NFL Draft.

Alter Ego: Darian Foster and Marshawn Lynch Sr.
Darian Foster and Marshawn Lynch Sr. are the alter egos of Arian Foster and Marshawn Lynch. The duo started an epic Madden rivalry that spanned decades. In order to get an edge over the other, they decided to raise sons to be the best running backs in the NFL for the sole purpose of winning in Madden.

Alter Ego: Choo Choo
There was nothing better than watching Redskins running back Clinton Portis bust out his Choo Choo character when doing interviews with the media. Sure, the character was definitely weird, but that is exactly what made it humorous.

Alter Ego: Lil’ Penny
Lil’ Penny has all the great characteristics of an awesome alter ego: he speaks his mind, he’s voiced by Chris Rock and he’s the opinion of Penny Hardaway’s bolder side. He likes guaranteeing championships just as much as he enjoys picking up the ladies. Lil’ Penny is the charismatic side in all of us.

5. Nyjer Morgan

Alter Ego: Tony Plush
The 2011 Milwaukee Brewers had enough talent to win it all, but unfortunately, they fell just shy of the World Series. One of the big reasons the Brewers kept winning was because they fed off the energy of Nyjer Morgan and his alter ego Tony Plush. Baseball fans outside of Milwaukee hated him, but Brewers fans adored him. The alter ego only grew when Morgan had the walk-off hit in extra innings to send the Brew to the NLCS.

4. Chris Paul

Alter Ego: Cliff Paul
The Chris Paul State Farm commercials seem to wear thin on fans for the sole reason that they are overplayed. However, there’s no denying that the concept of the commercial was refreshing when it first debuted. Identical twins Chris Paul and Cliff Paul were separated at birth. But, that didn’t prevent them in assisting others, whether it is basketball or insurance.

3. LeBron James

Alter Ego: The LeBrons
I’m a big fan of The LeBrons, four of LeBron James’ alter egos shown in a series of commercials together. What makes it so special is that James brings a different twist to each character, which allows them to mesh perfectly. The acting is decent and the characters are humorous. There’s not much more to ask for when it comes to athlete alter egos.

2. Larry Johnson

Alter Ego: Grandmama
Larry Johnson’s Grandmama is right up there with the best athlete alter egos of all time. The old lady who lived in a shoe had mad basketball skills. Grandmama also appeared on the hit TV show “Family Matters” in which she became Urkel’s partner in a basketball competition.

1. Deion Sanders

Alter Ego: Leon Sandcastle
By far the best commercial the NFL Network has ever put out is the one starring Deion Sanders’ Leon Sandcastle. The commercial was intended to promote the NFL Draft, but it grew to be much more than that. Overall, it is outstanding in every way possible, which includes a great performance from Sanders.
