Philip Hughes Tragedy Shocks Cricket World
Tragedy hit the cricketing world earlier this week in Australia as Philip Hughes died of a head injury sustained in a domestic match. What has been termed a “real-life tragedy,” the 25-year-old Aussie was in contention for a Test recall for the upcoming series against India.
“It is my sad duty to inform you that a short time ago Phillip Hughes passed away,” Australian team doctor Peter Brukner said. “He never regained consciousness following his injury on Tuesday. He was not in pain before he passed and was surrounded by his family and close friends.”
He was hit in the head by a bouncer.
“As a cricket community we mourn his loss and extend our deepest sympathies to Phillip’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time,” Brukner said. “Cricket Australia kindly asks that the privacy of the Hughes family, players and staff be respected.”
Hughes played 26 Tests in his career, having scored 1,535 runs at 32.65 with three centuries and seven fifties. His final Test played was at Lord’s in July 2013.
Additionally, he played 25 ODIs, most importantly, is still the only Australian to score a century on ODI debut.
Last month, Hughes played his final one day international match in Abu Dhabi against Pakistan.
“The touring Indian team joins the cricketing fraternity across the world in offering condolences to the family of Phillip Hughes, who has departed from our midst,” Team India said in a statement.
