Ask anyone - cricket is more than a sport in India. Although most will tell you that cricket is and has always been India's go-to sport, football was the country's main sport from the early 20th century until the 1960s. In fact, the Indian national team was once champs of Asia. Kolkata is still home to the world's largest soccer derby.

With the ISL up and running in India, football will soon take over cricket as the top sport.

With a lack of resources and money, however, there just hasn't been much development at the grassroots level of football in India. But now with a growing middle class, soccer has found its passion once more in a nation of more than 1.2 billion. While the I-League didn't gain much traction internationally, the Super League's international reach shows much potential for football in India.

The ISL is part of a recent trend of more money being put into sports and sports leagues.

STAR India invested .2 billion in sports last year, introducing major leagues in badminton and field hockey, in addition to ISL. With such a high number of people to reach, not only will India soon make waves in the sport of football, but potentially in all sports.
