In some states, tailgating is better than watching the actual game. That could have something to do with how bad that state is at sports, or how rockin’ the fans get before the big game.

Now, people, I understand your school knows how to party, but not all one trillion colleges could make a list of 20 — that’s just basic math. These 20 colleges are all known for their tailgating. Enjoy, and try not to miss your college days too much.

Plain and simple, North Dakota State is good at football. It may not play against the big boys for a national championship, but it has still managed to win four FCS Championships in a row. Needless to say, if a school wins championships, the fans are going to show up for tailgating before the games.

Northwestern may not be the best football school in the nation, and its basketball team has never made a trip to the NCAA tournament. Still, this school knows how to put on a great tailgate -- the reason why we are all here.

Fun fact: Purdue students actually dress up in costumes very early in the morning before games. Those fans go from bar to bar. After that, they then start tailgating. This is known as the Breakfast Club. If that isn't epic, then I don't know what is.

What do you think of when you think of Wisconsin? Some people think of cheese, others beer and some football. Put all three of those together, and it is no wonder why Wisconsin is a top tailgating school.

Other than the fact that the picture above features some fans with some pretty sweet overalls, Texas A&M is known as a top tailgating school. Maybe it has something to do with football and Texas going hand in hand. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Kyle Field (Home of the 12th Man) holds over 100,000 people. Regardless, here are two words I will leave you with: College Station.

QUICK! What is the nickname of Michigan's football stadium. If you guessed the Big House, you were 100 percent correct. Michigan is rich in history, especially when it comes to football, and football and tailgating tend to go hand in hand.

When you think college football, it is hard to not think about the Alabama Crimson Tide, even if you are an Auburn Tigers fan. Alabama is one of the best football programs on a yearly basis, for what it's worth.

Just looking at some of Florida State's fans, you could probably guess that the Seminoles know how to throw a tailgate, and in no way is that a bad thing. The reemergence of the football program probably helps some as well. You know, since FSU did win a title last year, after all.

Arizona State is one of the top party schools in the country. Needless to say, partying and tailgating go together like two very cozy peas in a pod. It also helps that the Sun Devils are solid at the only sport people seem to care about -- football.

If you have never actually tailgated at Colorado, then don't knock it 'til you try it. Boulder is a top college town, there is no doubt about it.

Isn't Texas known for its football or something? DUH!

Everything's bigger in Texas, right? That is certainly the case with the Longhorns' football stadium, which has been known to throw a good tailgate or two. I hear Austin is pretty cool, too.

Ohio State is a massive school. The Buckeyes are also great at football and basketball. Put that all together, and it's no wonder why Ohio State puts on a great show on and off the court/field.

First of all, the USC Trojans play in the Coliseum. Second of all, they play in Los Angeles. Third of all, they are great at football. There's no need for a "fourth of all."

There is something about the South and their football, which is why you are about to see a bunch of SEC schools. That’s really all that needs to be said here. Moving on…

Okay, Florida and Georgia shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same sentence, but I am cheating here a bit. I am talking about the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party for this tailgating fiasco — I am sure everyone has heard of it. The schools in general have pretty epic tailgates as well.

Penn State is yet another massive school, and the football tradition here is crazy. Moving along.

Tennessee’s football program certainly isn’t as good as it once was, but current head coach Butch Jones is working on that. Plus, the fans are simply what makes tailgating at Tennessee so special, which is what tailgating is all about — the fans.

Food, food and more food. When it comes to great foods at tailgates, LSU is at the top. Simply Googling some of the animals you will find being grilled at an LSU tailgate will have you wondering where your school went wrong. Oh yeah, the Tigers are pretty good at football, too.

It seems like Ole Miss football is starting to catch up with its tailgating, and I mean that in the best way possible. Rebels fans know how to throw a tailgate party, plain and simple. Nowadays, the actual Rebels are doing some work on the football field as well. Not many people will argue about Ole Miss being a top tailgating destination.
