Afghanistan will be making its World Cup debut alongside a set of teams ready to teach the newcomer a few lessons.

In addition to Afghanistan, Group A includes Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, England, Scotland and Bangladesh. Mohammed Nabi will be the team’s captain.

Although cricket has been played in Afghanistan for decades, the sport hasn’t gained much popularity until recent. In fact, it was first introduced by the British in 1839 in Kabul. Since then until about the late 1900s, cricket really didn’t make much of an impact in the country. In the past two decades, however, things have changed and Afghanistan are now well-represented in the World Cup.

How new are they to the world of cricket? They became an associate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) just two years ago (2013).  For those looking to root for the underdog, look no further than Afghanistan.
