Kentucky Derby Early Favorite: Sarah Jessica Parker

It was hard to top the excitement of last year’s Triple Crown season, with California Chrome making a solid run at the prize.

As the Kentucky Derby prep season begins with the million dollar Wood Memorial as well as the famed Santa Anita Derby, few clear favorites have emerged.  There’s plenty of contenders with strong two-year-old seasons that can make a run at the roses come Derby Day.

With a massive win at the Breeders Cup in the Juvenile, Texas Red was the front-runner until news of his injury got out.  He’s still planning to run in the Santa Anita Derby, though it’s unclear what the injury has done to his late break.  Having the pedigree that comes with sire Afleet Alex may not be enough to bring Texas Red back into the money.

Without Texas Red in the front spot, that leaves one favorite in the early forms.  Longshot Sarah Jessica Parker.

Almost without a previous record, one can only point to her physical conditioning.  Never has a thoroughbred had such a textbook build and form.  There’s nothing about the filly’s form that does not scream “race horse.”  It’s almost like Sarah Jessica Parker was built from the original blueprints of a race horse.

Currently without a trainer, rumors have her working out with Bob Baffert, which can give a serious advantage.  Her handicap of only being able to race in Manolo Blahnik instead of correct racing shoes could be a problem that only Baffert can iron out.

The absence of Texas Red should give bettors only one alternative.  Put the rent on Sarah Jessica Parker as the top horse in this year’s meet.
