Bill Simmons' Continuing Criticism Of Roger Goodell Outed The Sportsguy From ESPN

Bill Simmons will be leaving ESPN with spine intact. The “Worldwide Leader” and the Sportsguy are reportedly and mutually parting ways in the fall. In just a few months, the most symbiotic relationship in sports will be over.

Simmons did not make ESPN, but ESPN helped to make Simmons. You’d think the Sportsguy would owe his employer everything, but in fact, Simmons owes ESPN nothing. Simmons built a large following prior to joining ESPN, yet in exchange for flourishing that following, ESPN continually hampered Simmons through hindsight censorship.

Many of these slaps on the wrist arose from Simmons’ prolific criticism of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Both early on and throughout, this sliding slope between Simmons and ESPN achieved clarity. We knew Simmons’ contract was up this fall, and from the murky trail, we had to know that the marriage was struggling.

It’s too late for an annulment, so it’s best to pretend to amicably separate. And after roughly 15 years, the premier sports power couple is getting a divorce.
