ESPN’s oddly crafted Mount Rushmore would have to include the chiseled busts of Chris Berman, Stuart Scott, Scott Van Pelt and a stoic Bill Simmons posing in profile. The accompanying resonation on Twitter and query of Google “Is Bill Simmons on Mount Rushmore?” would trend across all topics. This is the clout summoned by Simmons. Metaphors be damned.

Simmons is a fan who became a god. A remote journalist who became a viral sensation. Bucking trends in favor of building new brainchilds. And this is what Simmons appears to be doing yet again, as Yahoo! Sports is reporting the Sportsguy will not renew his contract with ESPN this fall.

You can try to monetize a following, but you can never appreciate the true value of Simmons’ reach. Whether ESPN shortchanged the Sportsguy or Simmons bargained shrewd for his speculative worth, I have nothing but respect for this man who has built a mountain.

The only anti-Simmons sentiment I hold is because I offer it with brevity:

You Go, Bill.
