Winning and scoring are just parts of the game when it comes to sports. However, there are always some games each year in which ridiculous amounts of points are scored. These are the highest scoring games for every sport.

In the early days of the National Football League, a game between the Washington Redskins and New York Giants would establish records that remain unbeaten to this day. On November 27, 1966 the Redskins defeated the Giants 72-41 in what Washington coach Otto Graham joked was a “great defensive battle”. The teams combined for an NFL record 16 total TDs, nine of them going for 30 yards or more, and 113 points.

The record for most points scored in an NCAA game varies. Officially, the 2007 game between Navy and North Texas holds the record, with Navy winning 74-62 and the teams racking up a total of 136 points. However, in 1916, Georgia Tech, led by John Heisman (yes, the Heisman himself), defeated Cumberland College 222-0. However, this game may be unfair as Cumberland did not have a football team that season and sent 13 frat brothers to play.

The record for most combined goals in a game is a tie, as 21 goals were scored in two separate games in NHL history. The first came early, way back in 1920, as the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Toronto St. Patrick’s 14-7. 65 years later, their record was tied as Wayne Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 12-9 on December 11, 1985.

Not to be outdone by the professionals, the most combined goals ever scored in a college hockey game was 28 on December 17, 1968 as Northeastern defeated Brown 21-7. However, there are also two extremely lopsided contests in which a single team was able to net 22 goals; these brutal routs belong to Brown over Springfield in 1952 and Boston College over Ft. Devens State in 1948.

In 1925, the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies combined for 49 runs as the Cubs won 26-23. While this game serves as the highest total runs scored, the Cubs also hold the record for runs scored by a single team, racking up 36 in a rout against Louisville in 1897. The most runs by a single team in the modern era belongs to the Texas Rangers, who were able to plate 30 runs in a 30-3 rout of the Baltimore Orioles in 2007.

Once again not to be outdone by the professionals, the record for most combined runs plated in an NCAA baseball game belongs to Denver vs. Air Force on May 13, 1968 as Denver won 33-29. However, Nebraska holds what may be the greatest single team performance ever in baseball, racking up an amazing 50 runs against Chicago State in 1999.

As soccer is a game played all around the world, the highest scoring soccer game on record belongs to Australia, as they defeated American Samoa 31-0 in a FIFA World Cup qualifier in April of 2001. However, there is an interesting story of a Madagascan game that ended with a 149-0 score. AS Adema defeated Stade Olympique L'Emyrne 149-0 as L’Emyrne netted 149 own goals in protest of a refereeing decision.

In Division I college basketball, the highest scoring game went into triple-overtime and UNLV edged out Utah State 142-140 in 1985. However, disregarding division, the highest scoring collegiate basketball game belongs to Troy State University’s 258 – 141 win over DeVry University in 1992. It took seven statisticians nearly an hour to complete the stat book, as this game holds numerous "unbeatable" records, including most points at 399.

In 1983, The Detroit Pistons defeated the Denver Nuggets in triple overtime by a score of 186-184. This game currently holds numerous records, including: most combined points scored at 370, combined field goals with 142, combined assists with 93, most points scored by a team with 186 by Detroit, and most points scored by a losing team with 184 by Denver. Since this game, no two teams have come within 23 points of matching the record.
