It’s no secret that the Oklahoma City Thunder‘s Kevin Durant is a huge Washington Redskins fan. He grew up in Washington D.C. and has been on the Redskins’ sideline for numerous games over the years wearing Redskins apparel. But could Durant’s fandom run a little deeper?

Durant was on Matthew Berry’s Fantasy Football Podcast yesterday and the topic of his love of football came up. What Durant said next was a little shocking:

“It’s a passion of mine. I’d definitely love to own a team hopefully one of these years towards the end of my career,” Durant said. “So I follow it a lot.”

Back in June, Forbes estimated Durant’s net worth at $100 million, but the NBA star just signed a 10-year deal with Nike in 2014 that could be worth up to $300 million, including royalties. With endorsements and such, I’m sure Durant will have no problem becoming a minority owner in the NFL, but which team would he like to buy stake in?

“My first priority would be the Washington Redskins, even if it was just a small percentage,” Durant said. “I just want to get involved. Growing up five minutes away from the stadium and always being a fan, I have a Redskins tattoo on my forearm. So I feel part of the team so much, so to be an owner and all the way entrenched with the team would be cool.”

Although it’s not surprising that Durant would want to own a piece of his favorite football team, the timing of this announcement is great news for the Washington Wizards. Durant is entering the final year of his deal with the Thunder and will become a free agent next offseason. It’s already been reported that the two likeliest teams to get him signed to a long-term deal are the Thunder and Wizards. If Durant’s serious about purchasing a piece of the Redskins, wouldn’t it make sense to sign with the Wizards next offseason?
