Olympic Stadium In Rio Has Water And Electricity Cut Off Due To Unpaid Bills

The Joao Havelange stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil will be the host of the athletic events for the 2016 Olympic Games in August. The stadium seats 45,000 people and is home to Rio’s Botafogo football team, but recently turned control of the stadium over to the Brazilian government to get things prepared for the Summer Games.

In the exchange of control, it got lost in translation that someone needed to pay the water and electricity bills as both were cut off due to unpaid bills just seven months before the Olympics begin. Botafogo’s managers believe that it’s the government’s responsibility to pay the bills because the club didn’t receive payments for two years while the stadium was closed for repairs in 2013.

The two sides have met to discuss the issue, but neither would comment on the discussions.
