One-Eyed Horse Named Patch Brings Story to Cheer for to 2017 Kentucky Derby

By Anthony Blake

Starting in the final post spot with 30-1 odds, on paper it seems as if Patch is just another horse you’d take a chance on when betting the ponies to try and make a huge return.

But this isn’t just any horse, as this 2017 Kentucky Derby competitor has only one eye.

There really is some irony in the fact that the horse was named prior to needing his eye removed last June, since Patch is a name befitting of a pirate.

Experienced trainer Todd Pletcher is part of the team behind Patch, so there’s no reason to easily dismiss a horse just because it’s not like the others.

This colt may bring some long betting odds to the track on Saturday at Churchill Downs, but that’s nothing compared to the potentially life-threatening ailment he’s already overcome.
